2006 ........ [920*]

Figures so noted with an asterisk (*) indicate deaths as a result of Operation
Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. You may initially feel confused
when you look at these figures --especially when you see that in 1980, during
the term of President Jimmy Carter, there were 2,392 US military fatalities.

What this suggests is that our media and our liberal politicians pick and choose
and tend to present only those facts that support their agenda-driven reporting.
Another fact our media and politicians like to slant is that these brave men and
women losing their lives are minorities.

Wrong again - The latest census shows the following:
European descent (white) .69.12%
Hispanic ...12.5%
African American ...12.3%
Asian ...3.7%
Native American ...1.0%
Other . 2.6%.

The fatalities over the past three years in Iraqi Freedom are:
European descent (white) ...74.31%
Hispanic ...10.74%
African American ...9.67%
Asian ...1.81%
Native American ...1.09%
Other .2.33%.

These statistics are published by the DOD and may be viewed at: American War
and Military Operations Casualties: Lists and Statistics.

Thanks for the visit Mr. President

I don't want to re-write my post so I would just like to invite you to go to PD if you can and read my replies to dogstar and torry49 for a personal understanding about the fires in San Diego.
Thank you my friends.

Thanks Goldbug for the Wake-up Call

I woke up this morning to the thought that I have been replying to posts on PD because there actually have been posts to reply too, even though many turn out to be contentious beatings.
My thought is too try to jump start some discussion. We are called Conservative ACTION Group so -
Now that the primaries are looming and many of our states are moving their primaries up so they can have a say in who our final candidate will be I would like to see how we feel about our choices.
Did you watch the last debate? How did the candidates fair in your mind?

I'll start with my reply.

Bush / Patreus Report

How did a highly decorated, highly respected general that the Democrats 100% supported suddenly become a "Bush crony and mouthpiece" before he even makes his report to the Congress.
Could it be that things are changing in Iraq and it does not fit the Democratic plan?

Child Soldiers

I read this disturbing article this morning.

[From Abroad]

New Threat To U.S. Forces: Child Soldiers
One of the growing dangers to our troops today is child soldiers. Worldwide, there are about 300,000 active combatants age 17 or younger. In parts of Asia and Africa, their average age is 12. “ Child soldiers are present in every conflict zone where U.S. forces operate,” says P.W. Singer, author of the book Children at War.

The first U.S. soldier killed in Afghanistan, back in 2001, was shot by a 14-year-old sniper. In Iraq, child gangs throw firebombs at convoys to draw them into ambushes. Singer, who has advised the military on this problem, notes that our forces currently receive no specific training for facing children (the Rules of Engagement do permit troops to defend themselves). Soldiers only have seconds to decide if a child poses a threat.

Unfortunately, modern weapons are ideal for child soldiers, adds Singer: “An AK-47 made with plastics is easy to use. In half an hour, a 10-year-old can learn the basics and have as much firepower as a Civil War regiment.”

A U.S. judge recently ruled against trying a 15-year-old Afghani for war crimes, but some warlords who employ children are being prosecuted. Should child soldiers themselves be held accountable, or just those who use them?

Equality

Do you believe in the equality of opportunity or the equality of results?

I'll start the conversation:

I believe that all American citizens and those in the legal process of becoming American citizens should be given equal opportunity - education, work, health care, etc. With that opportunity people will make either good choices or bad choices and some a bit of both. In the end those who made good choices will be rewarded and those who make bad choices will live with the consequences. The results are not equal, but I don't believe they should be. People should be rewarded and/or live with the choices they make. People who make good choices should not be made to pay for those who make bad choices.
Of course, there are those who are unable to take advantage of opportunities due to mental, physical, emotional or other needs and our social conscience and political policies should help those people. Taxes and private charities should work together with a clearly defined policy in order to help the truly needy and prevent abuses so that even those disadvantaged will have access to equal opportunity.
I invite you to share your views.

Reply to PD Group Think

I joined EONS to learn what my fellow boomers were saying and doing. Knowing how others think and coming to an agreement or compromise is how we accomplish what is necessary.

I have said before that I follow the Reagan philosophy of turning to the people to solve the problems of the government. Others follow the Roosevelt philosophy of turning to government to solve the problems of the people. With that, we can discuss the value of each philosophy of two great Presidents.

Just as we join certain political parties, churches, social groups, etc, to meet with people who are of like mind with different approaches, we join certain groups on EONS for the same reason. Each group has a stated purpose and there is nothing wrong with belonging to a group where you can get things off your chest without being pounded. I, and I am sure others, belong to different groups to get different view points. It has been distressing to read the amount of hate being spewed out by people of our age group who have so much to offer. If we don't agree, we can say we don't agree and give reasons, but it is just wrong to go into a group just to be vindictive. To quote my kids, "That is sooo high school."

I hope that katenexile and daw1956 are able to keep the testy rhetoric down and get away from the "group think" accusation. I like belonging to both groups and would like to be challenged as an individual not attacked as a group.

Defining Conservatives

With the direction daw1956 has set for this group I thought it would be interesting to define our similarities and differences.
From recab:(thank you in advance) Conservatives believe individuals should be rewarded for their production, not taxed for doing well. This is why Conservatives are more productive and, collectively, account for a stronger America with a higher standard of living.

Adding to that: I subscribe to the Reagan philosphy of turning to the people to solve the problems of the government rather than the people turning to the government to solve the problems of the people as was the Roosevelt philosophy. In fairness, during the Roosevelt times the country was in economic disaster, but we have many safeguards in place now and feel the people can solve the problems that exist.

What say you?

Conservative Beginnings

Years ago I worked for Aetna. The memos that we used were called pinkies. No one ever called them memos. One day a newbie asked why? It took a while to find an old timer who knew that they were called pinkies because at first they were on pink paper. The name stuck even though the color did not.
It made me ask myself what in our political history made me a conservative. I found this interesting article from the Heritage Foundation.
It is a lot of reading, so I copied it to take my time. After reading it I am assured that I am on the right track with my beliefs - a diverse, but clear direction.
Hope you find it interesting, too.
