New attack fells Internet Explorer
The zero-day flaw is unreliable, but Symantec expects reliable exploits in the 'near future'
By Robert McMillan , IDG News Service , 11/22/2009

A hacker has posted attack code that could be used to break into a PC running older versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.

The code was posted Friday to the Bugtraq mailing list by an unidentified hacker. According to security vendor Symantec, the code does not always work properly, but it could be used to install unauthorized software on a victim's computer.

"Symantec has conducted further tests and confirmed that it affects Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7," the company wrote on its Web site Saturday. "We expect that a fully-functional reliable exploit will be available in the near future."

Security consultancy Vupen Security has also confirmed that the attack works, saying it worked on a Windows XP Service Pack 3 system running IE 6 or IE7. Neither company was able to confirm that the attack worked on Microsoft's latest browser, IE 8.

Symantec did not report that the attack is being used by cyber-criminals, but because Internet Explorer is so popular, this type of code is highly coveted by hackers. If the software does pop up in online attacks, it will put pressure on Microsoft to rush out an emergency patch, ahead of its regularly scheduled Dec. 8 security update. Microsoft could not be reached Saturday for a comment on the issue.

Together, IE 6 and IE 7 command close to 40 percent of the browser market.

The flaw lies in the way Internet Explorer retrieves certain Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) objects, used to create a standardized layout on Web pages. For the attack to work, the hacker would have to lure a victim to a Web page that contained maliciously encoded JavaScript, Symantec said. This technique has emerged as a favorite way for hackers to install their malicious software on computers in recent years.

"To minimize the chances of being affected by this issue, Internet Explorer users should ensure their antivirus definitions are up to date, disable JavaScript and only visit Web sites they trust until fixes are available from Microsoft," Symantec said.

Recent Increase in Phishing Emails

Email from att.net

Dear AT&T Internet Service Member:

We have recently noticed an increase in the number of "phishing" emails being reported among both our members and other Internet services. These emails attempt to obtain your personal or account information by falsely posing as a reputable company, such as AT&T, and ask you to reply by verifying your account information.

As general policy, we do not ask members to supply or verify Member ID and/or password information in email communications.

While it is necessary to send our members occasional email messages requesting updates to their personal or payment information, those requests will always direct you to a secure AT&T site, like the Member Center, that requires you to authenticate by logging in to access your account information and make changes. (Secure sites are designated by an 's' after the "http" in the address bar and a lock icon at the bottom of the screen.) We will not ask you to reply to an email message with this information.

Should you receive a request to provide this information by replying to an email, do NOT reply to it and do NOT provide your account information or password.

If you have any doubt of a message's authenticity, you can forward the email to scam@abuse-att.net.

More tips on how to identify and avoid phishing scams can be found at www.att.com/safety. Simply type the URL in your navigation bar.

We hope you find this information helpful. Thank you for being a part of our online community!

Untrusted Connection

>>>>>>>>>. uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate expired on 11/21/2009 5:59 PM.
(Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)

I Understand the Risks
If you understand what's going on, you
can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification.
Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
tampering with your connection.

Don't add an exception unless
you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification.
>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>> >>>

The above is the details of a Firefox message I get which tells me that the connection is an untrusted connection. I have connected to this site for months to do some selling on it-- but now get the message. In the address bar the URL does start with https://

Do you all think I would have a problem if I clicked to have Firefox mark an 'exception for this site'----------

I have tried to connect with both of my computers at home and went to a friends and tried there -- both with Firefox and also with IE. All get the same
What's your ideas on this??

Pictures going dark

I know I have heard that you loose some clarity of your picture when they are opened in JPG. but for years,I never noticed much change and just figured they were at that rate going to out last me anyway. Now, every time I bring up a page of my very nice bird photos or anything else, even recent ones, they are all darkened some to the point that they have to be lightened (Enhanced) to just see them at all. After several go arounds with the same photos, turning dark, I am wondering what the hey! And how do i avoid this happening to my photos. I had noticed several months ago that i could not open them from my camera with any program I have except photoshop, and it is not very good for the sorting etc. . But if i opened them in for instance Windows photo Gallery, they are mostly too dark and if i tweak them to make them the proper lightness for viewing, then when I take them to photoshop elements, they are blown out. Too light! So, I have been using photoshop for sorting and they seemed to be fine for viewing and sending on the internet etc. Now, all my photos seem to be going South so to speak. Any clues?

Microsoft Declares War on Google

Well, they already have given OS Chrome. But now they're playing dirty like the ongoing war between Apple and MS.

This is just a clip I picked up. In simple terms, MS is trying to make deals with major media groups to block all content from Google Search. This is no joke. Guess MS is aiming to make "Bing the King". view link

"News Corp. and Microsoft are reportedly in "early stage talks" to cut an exclusive deal that would prevent Google from indexing the media conglomerate's news Websites some of which include The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post and others. The deal will allegedly give Microsoft's Bing search engine the exclusive rights to deliver search results and news pages with New Corp. content, according to The Financial Times . The report also says that Microsoft has approached other unnamed major Web publishers to cut similar deals."

Guess we might need to change our default search engine to Dogpile, which consolidates search results from Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.

Personally, I find this practice totally reprehensible in spades.

Spyware, Part 2

Well, as Kirk511pointed out, my port scanner is also going up and down like a sine wave. And it seems to coincide with the amount of spyware I detect on my PC each day.

What disturbs me is that the only two pieces of software that are detecting and putting into quarantine this spyware is Advanced SystemCare and AVG. All, Ad-Adware and SUPERAntiSpyware are detecting are tracking cookies. When I had Malwarebytes, it simple just stopped functioning, so I got rid of it---twice!.

This doesn't exactly give me much peace of mind.

Could you tell me website of free virus software?

Hi--

This has perhaps been mentioned before, but I am now in need of either renewing my Norton subscription or going a different route. The desktop computer that this would be on is used very little for Internet use. However, I still need protection from virus, etc. (I have a laptop for my use on the Internet, e-mail, and Eons, etc.).

If you can direct me to the website of one that is free and one that others have found to work for them, I would be most appreciative.

BTW - Happy Thanksgiving to all.
