On to fossils

Are those little fossil golden books any good? Think we are going to have an extra credit assignment to go down to the Falls of the Ohio and do some work so I'm going to need some reference. Our text books have almost nothing on fossils......headed to the bookstore at lunch.

Tests, tests and more tests

Topo map test last night. Thought I was doing pretty good last night till it got to drawing out a terrain. You know you have to mark the contour lines along a cross section of the map, then graph it out. Those are always tricky for me for some reason. This one was really hard, he only put the measurement on one line and we had to figure out the rest. There was a stream going down the middle and I knew it went up hill to the west and only could assume that it went up hill on the other side stream as well.....but that was 10 points so I hope I didn't totally blow it.

Erosion test tomorrow night!!! He's killing me!

Anywhere in the world

Nam's reponse to a post suggested taking off and collecting rocks all around the world. If you had one place (only one) on this earth to go collect rocks, or one place to see a geologic feature, where would it be?

Where is everyone?

Must be out rock hunting. I'm trying to study for next test. Earthquakes, plate tetonics and mountains...yuck. Plus were are working on topography maps. I've had some exposure to them before so get the general idea. Last night he threw in Ranges, Townships and sections. I have also had a bit on that....I can't believe he's going to make it one whole lab test!! More than I ever wanted to know! But we have a few more weeks before I have to sweat that one.

Earthquake

Just hear that an earthquake occured off the coast of Samoa with a tsunami hitting the capital shortly after and they had put out the alert for New Zealand and other Pacific areas.

Can you say Stoli straight up?

Man what a test!! I just KNEW he was going to pull the the stuff that he did. It was like playing Geology Trivial Pursuit! Crap that he barely mentioned in passing that had (what I could tell) no significance to ROCKS was on the test. Some stuff that he made a big deal about, wasn't. AND there were a few words that I swear never was discussed in class. What special quality does the mineral carnotite have? I started to say it tasted good on a burrito (carne.....hee).

And several other terms that weren't discussed in class. The only redeeming factor was that the test was 200 points so you could miss 20 and still get an A.

Sorry to bitch.....but it was a bitch.

Rock lab Thur. night, hope this will be a bit easier. I know what rocks are :-) Hope he doesn't trip us up with some silly shit again.

Not related to rocks

Milkywayroad

Hope you're feeling a bit better today. Was going to send you a PM but looks like you don't have that feature so I'll take it public. Wanted to invite you to the Indiana Hoosiers group. Just a bunch of Indiana nuts that you might enjoy. Some from down south, a bunch from up your way and a few farther north. Come on over and check us out. I'll vouch for ya.

Question

Ok, so the mineral lab test sucked majorly. I studied the ones in the kit, thought I pretty much had it...then he pulled out huge chucks of minerals for the tests that didn't look anything like the samples in the kit. If I got 80%, I'm going to be suprised.

Now my question. "Scientists believe that very few, if any of the rocks presently found on the earth's surface are old enought to have been thre since the beginning of the earth approx. 4.5 bil. years ago. If that is true, what must have happened to the original rocks?"

I'm not finding the anwer in hand out or in the book. I don't know if he is asking us to speculate or if there is a "for sure" answer. My speculative guess it is because of the rock cycle. That rocks are continuously changing and evolving through erosion and solidification to become something different. What do you guys think?

Say a prayer

for me tonight. Lab test over minerals. At least 25, have to know the name, chemical make up, properties, if they are on the Moh's scale and what they are used for in industry....YIKE!
