New Movie/Old Movies
This weekend I watched the 09 movie-Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp.
This movie brought to mind James Cagney's Public Enemy which I've placed on my Netflix queue.
I thought we might enjoy discussing both.

Sage Advice- from Philip Marlowe
Several years ago I served on a negotiation team bargaining on behalf of teachers in my district.
One weekend following a particularly unpleasant/difficult session Turner was showing a Philip Marlowe marathon.
While watching, I was inspired by the hero and wished I could use his words at the negotiation table. I was sure this would solve ALL problems. I grabbed pen and paper and began to copy down favorite lines.
I then compiled them to share with my team mates. We all had a good laugh.
Here are a few of the Marlowe quotes.

Academy Award History
The 26th Annual Academy Awards, held on March 25, 1954 from the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.
When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, movies had just begun to talk. That first ceremony took place during an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.

Classic Movie/Classic Book connection
I am enjoying watching this line-up.
It was interesting to discover they were all written by Thornton Smith who died young (in his 40s) before he realized the success of his books.
I decided to google these books on Amazon. I plan to order and read them this winter.
Anyone else enjoying these?

A Christmas Story
This movie has become one of my holiday favorites. It has something for just about everyone -whatever the age.
One of the things that makes it so appealing is that it is told from the perspective of a child who has set his heart on receiving one gift -which he believes is the one gift beyond compare.
I heard someone on the Delilah radio show sharing a memory of receiving the one gift from Santa that she had set her heart on.
It made me remember my one special gift from Santa I had set my heart on. I wouldn't even ask or wish for anything else or anything more than this one thing.
I think we are blessed if we have one such memory.
Its a memory of ourselves in our childhood innocence and pure heart.
It doesn't really matter what the gift was. It doesn't have to have been anything grand or costly- just something we'd set our heart on and the magic of believing.
Merry Christmas (and belated Happy Hanukkah) to all.
Lynne.

Holiday Classics
I was a bit surprised when I asked my 4th graders how many had seen or heard of the Nutcracker Ballet -that 2 students had not. I did my best to familiarize them with the story and music.
I was astonished that when I asked the same question about A Christmas Carol that about 2/3 of my students said they did not know this story. We watched the Alistair Sims version today and discussed the movie.
I feel so much better now that I have familiarized them with both of these classics.

Haunting Movie Classics
Since we are now into October, I'd like us to list, recommend, reminisce, chat about the movies that HAUNT us.
Of course, I mean GHOST stories but I also mean story lines that haunt us(even if there is no actual ghost in the script).
I'll start with one of my favorites
The Uninvited/starring Ray Malland
I'm haunted by
the tune- "Stella By Starlight"
the fragrance of MIMOSA
the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore
the old house (and memories/ghosts) brought back to life by the brother and sister.
the loveable dog
Do any of you love this one, too?
