TCM Star Of The Month

Humphrey DeForest Bogart
(December 25, 1899 – January 14, 1957) was an American actor.
After trying various jobs, Bogart began acting in 1921 and became a regular in Broadway productions in the 1920s and 1930s. When the stock market crash of 1929 reduced the demand for plays, Bogart turned to film. His first great success was as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), and this led to a period of typecasting as a gangster in B-movies. His breakthrough came in 1941, with High Sierra (1941) and The Maltese Falcon (1941). The next year, his performance as Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1942) raised him to the peak of his profession and at the same time, cemented his trademark film persona, that of the hard-boiled cynic who ultimately shows his noble side. Other successes followed, including To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948), with his wife Lauren Bacall; The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948); The African Queen (1951), for which he won his only Academy Award; Sabrina (1954), and The Caine Mutiny (1954). During a film career of almost thirty years, he appeared in 75 feature films.
At the time of his death from cancer in 1957, Bogart was one of the most respected figures in American cinema. Since his death, his persona and film performances have been considered as having a lasting impact and have led to him being described as a cultural icon. In 1997, Entertainment Weekly magazine named him the number one movie legend of all time. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the Greatest Male Star of All Time.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO FAY WRAY
Faye Wray dead at 96

Actress Fay Wray, Object of `King Kong,' Dies at 96 Aug. 9 2004 (Bloomberg) -- Fay Wray, the actress best known for her role as the object of a giant ape's desire in the 1933 film ``King Kong,'' died yesterday. She was 96.
Wray died in her Fifth Avenue apartment in New York, the New York Times reported, citing friend Rick McKay.
As blonde-haired beauty Ann Darrow in ``King Kong,'' Wray earned the nickname ``The Queen of Scream'' for the yelp she uttered as she was plucked out of an Empire State Building window by the giant ape and carried to the top of the 102-story skyscraper.
``Although he had tremendous strength and power to destroy, some kind of instinct made him appreciate what he saw as beautiful,'' Wray said in a 1993 interview. ``Just before he dies, he reaches toward me but can't quite reach. The movie affects males of all ages.''
Fay made more than 100 films in her career, yet she was forever identified with ``Kong.''
``Recently, a 6-year-old boy said to me, `I've been waiting to meet you for half my life,''' she said in the 1993 interview.
Wray often repeated the story of how one of the movie's producers told her that he had an idea for a film, and ``the only thing he'd tell me was that it was going to have `the tallest and darkest leading man in Hollywood.'''
``Well, naturally I thought of Clark Gable, hopefully, and when the script came I was absolutely appalled! I thought it was a practical joke,'' she said.
1976 Remake
The 1976 remake of ``Kong'' won an Academy Award for visual affects, and Jessica Lange received a Golden Globe for playing Wray's role of Ann Darrow. In 1988, the American Film Institute ranked ``King Kong'' 43rd on its list of 100 Greatest Films in American film history.
Fay Wray was born Vina Fay Wray near Cardston, Alberta, on Sept. 15, 1907. Her parents divorced when she was young and her mother moved Wray and her five siblings to Los Angeles.
As a teenager, Wray began to act in small parts in silent movies. Her first movie role was at the age of 16 in ``Gasoline Love'' (1923). Her second film was ``The Coast Patrol'' (1925), and was followed by four more movies. Her first hit was in the lead role in director Erich von Stroheim's ``The Wedding March'' in 1928.
Her prominent movies included ``The Four Feathers'' (1929), ``Dirigible'' (1931), ``One Sunday Afternoon'' (1933) and ``Viva Villa!'' (1934). During her film career, she starred with such leading men as Gary Cooper, Ronald Coleman, Frederic March and William Powell.
Married Two Screenwriters
After ``King Kong,'' her popularity declined and she made low- budget films. She retired in 1942, and reappeared in the movies ``Queen Bee'' (1955) and ``Crime of Passion'' (1957), and also in the television series ``The Pride of the Family.'' The show co- starred Natalie Wood and Paul Hartman and ran from 1953 to 1955. She made her last screen appearance in the 1980 TV movie ``Gideon's Trumpet'' with Henry Fonda.
She married John Monk Saunders, the screenwriter of ``Wings'' and ``Dawn Patrol,'' in 1928. The couple, who divorced in 1939, had a daughter, Susan. In 1942, Wray married Robert Riskin, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of ``It Happened One Night,'' ``Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,'' and ``Lost Horizon.'' They had daughter, Vicki, and a son, Bobby. Riskin died in 1955.
Wray's last marriage was to Dr. Sanford Rothenberg, one of Riskin's doctors, in 1970. He died in 1991.
