Don't Believe Everything You Hear
"My dear friends, don't believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.
Here's how you test for the genuine Spirit of God. Everyone who confesses openly his faith in Jesus Christ—the Son of God, who came as an actual flesh-and-blood person—comes from God and belongs to God. And everyone who refuses to confess faith in Jesus has nothing in common with God. This is the spirit of antichrist that you heard was coming. Well, here it is, sooner than we thought!"
(I John 4:1-3 The Message)
I have a question about this passage, one to which I don't have an answer. A person makes this public statement: "I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ." Have they "passed the test" of this Scripture? Is this person from God?

I Peter 3:8-12
Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For,
"Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

Proverbs 20:8-12
When a king sits on his throne to judge,
he winnows out all evil with his eyes.
Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure;
I am clean and without sin"?
Differing weights and differing measures—
the LORD detests them both.
Even a child is known by his actions,
by whether his conduct is pure and right.
Ears that hear and eyes that see—
the LORD has made them both.
he winnows out all evil with his eyes.

Proverbs 15:1-3
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.
The eyes of the LORD are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,

The eyes of the LORD are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

What Should We Think About?
What do we think about? Is it the national news, a television drama, a reality show, something we are reading, some bit of gossip we've heard? Is it the kids, our job, our parents, our church, our latest vacation? Here are some questions that we can ask ourselves to weigh and measure what we are thinking about:
Is it true?
Is it honorable?
Is it right?
Is it pure?
Is it lovely?
Is it admirable?
Is it excellent?
Is it worthy of praise?
If you are like me, your mind wanders through so many different topics and scenarios that it feels like it is impossible to guard your thoughts. Thankfully God realized this about our human nature and gave us this verse in Phillipians 4:8 to help us out.
"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." (NLT)
