Smothered Greens
Here's one of mom's recipes, tuned up to save the heart and the fat. Healthier and just as tasty.
3 C water
1/4 lb smoked turkey breast, skinless
1 Tbsp fresh hot pepper, chopped
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp cloves, ground
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp thyme
1 stalk scallion, chopped
1 tsp ginger, ground
1/4 C onion, chopped
2 lb greens (mustard, turnip, collard, kale, or mixture)
1. Place all ingredients except greens into large saucepan and bring
to boil.
2. Prepare greens by washing thoroughly and removing stems.
3. Tear or slice leaves into bite-size pieces.
4. Add greens to turkey stock. Cook for
20–30 minutes until tender.
These healthy greens get their rich flavor
from smoked turkey, instead of fatback.

Remember: weigh-in Monday morning!!!
You'll want to record your weight and your points on the spreadsheets in the morning... remember, one habit point for each day you kept your personal resolution, five extra if you lost weight or maintained, and ten extra if you met your fitness commitment.
I set my goals high, and it's been a busy week, so I'm not going to get the fitness bonus this week. I've been squeezing in walks here and there, but I've only made it to the gym two days, and I'm a full ninety minutes short. That's OK, though... the season's young, and every day is a new beginning!
What with my birthday and being rushed and overscheduled, I may well have gained a pound or two, too... but it'll come off again!
The bottom line is, I'm not throwing in the towel. Not a chance in hell. Don't you do it either!
If you need help getting around on the spreadsheets, let me, Kimm, or photonana know!
Also, those of you who are participating in this, why don't you dash off your address to CommunityGal if you'd like some Eons swag... they like what we're doing here, as it turns out!

When life throws you a brick
Lately, I've told God that I would like Him to pass this brick on to someone else. I've had enough for a while. I may knock my head against the wall for a while until I realize the challenge God sends me isn't going away. It's going to be part of my life history. God will send me His power along with the challenge. In reviewing the patterns of my life, it seems that eventually the bad things develop into a better life for me. I keep asking for that faith and patience. For that reason and to inspire your life and faith, I like this parable:(contued in lst reply).

Dr. William Davis, cardiologist, is back with his recommendations and facts about healthy, tasty foods good for your heart and body. Easy to prepare and to find as you shop.
He is not referring to whole grain foods.
I had forgotten that some fresh fruits are higher in sugar than others such as grapes and bananas. Diabetics need to know this, but so do the rest of us in watching sugar intake

Quote of the Day
"People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success."
~Norman Vincent Peale
Changing our lifestyle and getting rid of bad old habits is not for the timid. It is a major overhaul and it takes a great deal of determination and hard work. It's not a task for sissies. If you don't believe in yourself, you won't do it.
You have to be prepared to stand up to that bag of chips, that package of cookies and those co-workers with candy dishes and walk the other way. It's not always easy to do that, especially in the beginning. But I can tell you that every time you make it through the day, it becomes easier. Each day, you will become stronger.
I know that you can do it. I've seen it done and lead people down the path to success. The only difference between needing to lose 10 pounds or 100 pounds is the amount of time it takes to lose it. The rules to the game are all the same. Rule #1. You MUST believe in yourself. It doesn't matter if I do or your spouse and family and friends do. YOU have to. Once you honest to goodness believe you can, you will succeed!
When you really believe in yourself, you won't make excuses to yourself. There will be no need for that. Each day will be it's own motivation and you will face it with enthusiasm and the knowledge that you are in control. What a wonderful way to face the day!

I hate my __________!!
I hate my upper arms. Maybe you have parts of your body you are not fond of either. The areas you always have to cover or disguise. I disguise mine as wrapped hams or sleeping armadillos under fabric.
I was looking at Slyvia’s and Geri’s arms in the Minnesota State Fair pictures, and thought about how much I have hated my upper arm’s ah, ahem, “fluffiness and fullness” for the longest time.
Slyvia’s looked great, as did Geri’s - toned and shapely.
(I was already POed that Slyvia is ahead of me in the weight loss – darn her for her drive. Competition keeps me moving when all else fails.)
So, instead of continuing to bleat about it, I am going to increase my upper body workouts during this challenge, and
I am going to document the results. Tonight I am going to take a picture and in 11 weeks from now I will take another photo to see the difference. I am not going to post my “before” picture – too terrifying even for me, but I will after 11 weeks.
Even if I have not eliminated the “bat-wings” I will still feel better about my arms and learn to love them again. I remember doing hand-stands next to the bed and I wonder if I will be able to do that again?!
Now that the arms are a focus for me, I exercised (or exorcized) my upper body this morning before spin class, and did a few push-ups off my desk before lunch. Time to lose the armadillos!
