Fighting the Reaper

Old age isn't for sissies. Neither is late middle age, as I see it.

My scrawny-butt husband dodged a bullet just this past November when he had a heart attack. And this morning I got a telephone call from my mother, informing me that my aunt is in the hospital with the same symptoms that he had. They did an EKG, and her enzymes are elevated. They have NOT done an angiogram yet, presumably because she doesn't have a penis. (And yes, that sounds crass, but studies support that there is gender bias where thoroughness and aggressiveness in diagnosing heart symptoms are concerned. If you're a cardiologist in Charlotte, NC and don't like what I just wrote, bite me. AFTER you catheterize my aunt, that is.)

My aunt is only eleven years older than I am. I think of her more as a sister. And this turn of events upsets me terribly.

My father died when he was my age.

Am I fighting the Reaper? You bet I am. I am not ready for the system to break down. I am not ready to go gently into that good night, to borrow a bit from Dylan Thomas. I doubt I'll ever be ready for that. I'll be kicking and screaming every bit of the way. And I'll kick and scream every bit as much when that SOB starts making grabs at those who I love.

I can be a nutrition nazi and a kitchen cop with my husband. We live together. It's easy. And I suspect it would be easier for him to have another heart attack than it would be to cross me when I've got my mind made up that things are going to change. So, he does what he needs to do to stay healthy now, and all is well in our world.

What do I do with my aunt, though? She lives halfway across the country. And bless her beautiful heart, she's German, and there's nothing better for her than "Bauernbrot dicht mit schoener Deutschen Butter gestrichen." Unless it's "Bienenstich." God help us all.

She WILL get that angiogram by Monday, or my ass is flying to Charlotte, and I'm going to go full-bore Sylvia on a cardiologist. And then I'm going to invite her here again, where all of you can take her under your wing. We're cruising together in October, and I may have just found another gym partner for those early mornings on the ocean.

Effective exercises you can gradually master

Many of these I was taught after knee surgery for a period of 4 months on a one-to-one basis with a physical therapist.

We were lying on a flat bed. I know my own bed, which is softer but still does the trick.

I still can't get down on all 4's on the floor, but I can use my bed and get the same workout.

Our therapists told us never to use more than 5 lb weights in each hand. Eventually, start with one weight and work up to using both.

Some look impossible initially. But using a yoga principle, combine the power of proper breathing and your body muscles to allow you to move easier each day with practice.

The little train that finally did: "I think I can, I think I can---I did it."

Start out with maybe 4 or 5 reps on each side, keep adding reps.

Be sure to count out loud. That assures your body and you that you are breathing.

Do these in the privacy of your home, wear loose clothing. I find some music that I am in the mood for.

Do some very deep breathing before you start and when finishing. Don't immediately get up and do something else. Lie there after you have finished and allow your body to feel good. Do a litte meditation or visualize some pleasant scenes

Along the way, we have been told that our stomachs are the size of a fist. It has elasticity. If you overeat, you stretch your stomach and feel you've overeaten--or should.

Of late, I watch portions and measre foods. But now, my stomach tells me it's full.

That's the advantage of eating small, healthy meals over the course of a day, plus drinking fluids before and after as well as other times during the day.

The sad part of those who have stomach stapling and other surgeries is that they have to be extraordinarily careful in the amts of food their smaller stomach will allow. If they don't, that stomach stretches for further problems.

Same with losing and gaining weight. The elasticity of your stomach allows more weight but also develops more body cells.

There's a study in the link, showing people who fasted longer than we usually do. They were hungry and ate immediately, but didn't overeat.

For obese people starting on a weight program, it's fact their stomachs want more food.

That's the advantage of eating small healthy foods during the day with plenty of liquids

Oh my..... (a progress report)

I just weighed in.

If I lop off my pinky toe, or even just file down my nails, I will be in the high one nineties. Is fuss taim onna two honna in LUNGTIME!!!

I should probably stay away from sharp objects today!!!

Little changes

First, I cut back on chocolate. Where I would eat/drink it at least once a day - and usually more, I now might have something chocolate once or twice a month. For a die-hard fourth generation chocolate ADDICT, that is amazing!

Second, as of June 1st, I gave up "fast food". Again, that is HUGE for me, 'cos I was eating it 2 or 3 times a day.

Third, since May 12th, I started going into my pool once a week and spending an hour to an hour and ahalf, just moving around. Modified jumping jacks, side stepping, walking backwards, holding on to a air mattress and frog-kicking back and forth, lunges on the steps, and then lay on the mattress and do arm strokes over and over. After a couple of weeks, I was going out there 2 or 3 times a week.

So, how am I doing so far? (see reply)
