Age Discrimination

Hello, all. I'd love to hear some stories about peoples' experiences of age discrimination. I know that discrimination by "age" is technically illegal, but employers can find lots of other reasons not to hire older workers. I've long since disavowed myself of the notion that older workers are more valuable because of their longer experience in the work place. We're more expensive, that's all.

Patience worked for me..

Hi Everyone,

About a year ago I posted about age discrimination I encountered when I was close to being hired. I then wrote that I did get a part-time job at a not-for-profit company.

Well, this week I was asked if I would like to work FULL TIME! You bet I do!!! Benefits (even though I'll be ready for Medicare in a few months) and paid vacation, holidays, etc. They know my age and my boss said she was afraid to lose me to another job and offered me full time.

Sometimes we may not be able to get the jobs we truly want but, in taking a part-time job you can prove your talents and work ethics. When the employer sees that you can do the job and get things done on a part-time basis, well they will know you can get more done efficiently full time.

I'm so happy and I wanted to share this with you.

Found Work

Just wanted to let y'all know that at 61 I have been hired by Dominos as a deleviry, future pizza maker.

When I got the call from the manager I told her that I was 100 and she said good - older workers are better than young people - they have a work ethic the yound don't have.

She was only slightly concerned that I told her that I am not a 'team player' but when I told her that every company
has to have a team, but I'm not going to wait till the others 'see' the light, I'm going to get things done - she smiled and said let's go.

Gettin along great. Have also made it a point to outwork my
co-workers which isn't hard - these young kids (Gen x) don't
know how to move fast - only their fingers on gadgets.

Only 8 months till I can file

Oops

My story is likely not unusual. I was securely embedded in a career. Electronic printing industry. After 18 years with Xerox, I moved to a software company. Sales support, training, lots of travel throughout the US, and into other countries as well.

But I made the mistake of turning 55, and was caught in a staff reduction at the company. And discovered that the industry that I was in had a fascination with young and less expensive kids.

Also, that a degree was a key to getting any of the jobs that I was qualified for.

After some terrible times, I went to work for TSA, and back to school. I get my degree in Business Administration in September.

But now I am faced by a dilemma. I am not certain where to take all of this. I feel that I have a lot to offer, but really am not certain what industry to pursue. I have five years in the Government section now, and am considering following this, as the time in seems to be worthwhile, and see if I can find something challenging and that pays enough to get us by comfortably. I figure that I can retire when I am 76, IF they don't move the ends again.

So, I keep plugging away, and trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.

Hello, everyone

At 61 I am training for a new profession, one I can do with my current leg situation. I am seeing it as a sort of adventure and I think it will be interesting to see where I can be in 5 years.

After 10 or so years I'd like to try full time writing although for one reason or another I'll have to retrain myself for that, too.

I may wear out - doubtful - but I won't rust out.

I may take a look at some do-it-from-home types, too.

Do You Twitter?

Does anybody on here use Twitter for business or fun? I've found it's a great place to let people know about new blog posts, new pages on my website or just for fun.

One guy on Twitter, view link has created a great handbook for using Twitter, which you could get by following him and sending a pm.

Ed Dale of the 30 day challenge also recommends Twitter, as does Mike Klinger of the Renegade University.

Great updates on network marketing and most provide links to their new stuff.

Here's my Twitter address

If you have one, post it and we can follow each other.

A Career Site

There is a career site that I have used in the past and did find a nice consulting position that gave me the opportunity of planning and launching a new business model for someone. All of the jobs posted are geared toward the travel and tourism industry, but cover many different skills and positions. There is a small monthly charge, but some of the most prominent companies in the U.S. (and some internationally as well) list positions there.

If you want to check it out, you can do so at the following link. Please know that I am not in any way affiliated with this company. Just thought it was worth passing along.
