We spent last week in Leelanau County visiting the Sleeping Bear Dunes and camping at Platte River bear Beulah. Our weather was nice most of the time and the colors were awesome!

I just read in our local paper that Meijer's is donating over a million dollars for the construction of a new rail-trail which will run from the west side of Owosso to Ionia.
This is very exciting for us because we live in this area and are avid bikers. I know that there is an old railroad bed that I always thought would be good for this, now it looks like it is really going to happen. The only problem is that they didn't say when the construction would begin.

I would like to urge everyone in Michigan to consider this proposal in this November's election. This proposal wants to legalize marijuana for medicinal use only. Since I have multiple sclerosis myself, I am fully supportive of this bill. Please don't believe the propaganda that you are seeing on TV. Marijuana is one of the best pain killers available today and it is far safer than many of the prescription drugs which are legal. It is also one of the best drugs to control nausea and vomiting for chemo patients. It is NOT any more addicting than alcoholic beverages. The drug industry themselves is the main group against this passing for obvious reasons. It would be horrible if people could use a drug for pain that they could grow themselves.

Lumberman's Monument is a monument dedicated to the workers of the early logging industry in Michigan. It was built in 1931, dedicated in 1932 and is managed by the USDA Forest Service [1]. It is located in Iosco County along the Au Sable River within Huron-Manistee National Forests. Access to the park is on River Road, which intersects M-65 west of Tawas City, Michigan. Monument Road, from East Tawas, also leads directly to the monument. The monument is part of the River Road Scenic Byway, a 22-mile drive between Oscoda and South Branch that runs parallel with the beautiful Au Sable River. It is a designated National Scenic Byway.

In the late 19th century, the area was heavily logged for timber that was used in building houses and factories. After the logging industry settled down, much of the area was repopulated with trees, which is the forest we see today.
The monument is located in a forest that was heavily logged in the second half of the 19th century. The white pine made up much of the forest. It was in high demand nationwide for housing, ships, and other manufacturing. During the winter, Sawyers cut down the trees and swampers trimmed them. The logs were then loaded onto sleds and pulled to the nearest riverbank by horses or oxen, over paths in the ice, and dumped down stream towards the sawmill. Loggers downstream had to deal with log jams on a regular basis. Once the logs finally reached the sawmill, they were cut into boards for use in manufacturing buildings like houses and factories.

As littleeva mentioned, this is a very nice boatride. The boat is docked on River Rd just out of Oscoda. The prices are very reasonable and they even let me take my dog. The ride lasts about 2 hrs and autumn is a great time to go.

The largo Springs Interpretive Site is well worth seeing and has quite a history. It is located on River Road just down the road from the Lumberman's monument. This area is open all year round.

In the days of the settlers, this spring was used for a drinking water source. This continued when the loggers came and dams were built to divert the water to the logging camps. In 1934 the CCC constructed a trail and maintained the dam. A storm took it out in 1981 but was renovated in 1991. The "One Step at a Time" Campaign build the stairway. It seems like 1000 steps especially when going up, but its great exercise! The US Forest Service maintains the area.

You get a spectacular view of the AuSable River from this site.

THE WALKWAY TO THE LIGHTHOUSE FROM THE CAMPGROUND

. . . And speaking of Tawas, we can't overlook the Tawas Pte Lighthouse which is near the end of the State Park. This light is opened to the public and all they ask is a donation, no set fee to climb to the top. You get a beautiful view and it is almost hard to imagine that it once stood at the edge of the water. This is no longer the case. In fact, you can venture about 1/2 mile beyond the
light. . .just don't do it if there is fog. The coastguard has a very loud foghorn out there! All you need is humidity nearing the 90 percentile and "there she blows".
And we sure can't forget the gift shop which is right nextdoor. This is a fairly new building which was constructed within the last 10 years. . .I'm not sure exactly when.
Tawas Pte is a favorite for the bird watching community. I have seen many birdwatching groups there while I was camping.
You can also view much wildlife there, especially coyotes and fox. While camping there the last time (2 years ago), while sitting by our campfire at night, a coyote trotted right thru our campsite completely ignoring us. The next night, a fox trotted down the road in front of our camp. He glanced over at us and kept on going. About 3 years ago, we had a black squirrel adopt us. He climbed up our legs and sat on our laps looking for peanuts. We called him "Rocky". If I'd go down to the water fountain, he'd follow me like a dog. He was so cute and I really missed him when we left. As tame as he was, I know we weren't the first people that he adopted. Yes! I've had a lot of good times at Tawas Pte State Park.
