Breezy fun

I've been stripping out a 1961 Studebaker Lark Cruiser this week. I bought this thing maybe two years ago because it had a freshly built Stude V8 in it as well as new brakes, tires and dual exhausts.
I briefly thought about just redoing the whole car as it wasn't in bad shape at all, but I've got too many projects already and in fact, this one's gonna expedite another Stude I have that's more valuable and rare.
Anyway, I got all the removable sheet metal and interior off of it and decided I'd take one last spin before rendering the brakes inoperable. Sadly, the wind noise overtakes the sweet growl of the V8 as we get going each time, but it's amusing to watch anyway.

HAMB NOSTALGIA DRAGS

Hi Everyone,

August 22nd. At the MoKan Dragstrip just south of Pittsburg, Kansas just over the Kansas line in Missouri. Mike went last year, and has ranted and raved about them all year long, chomping at the bit to get there next weekend. He is taking my digital along with him for pics, so I probably with have a smart card full in the day he is there. Since my draggin days are over, and I paid my dues during the glory days at the strip here, I am going to stay here and take one of the cars to a show, my idea of R&R.

I know you fellas out there would tar and feather me if I didn't let ya know. LOL ALSO, there is a huge SWAP meet in Springfield, Missouri, been told it is better than the one here. No clue where in Springfield, but it is Friday and Saturday, so some may want to come early, for the swap meet and then take in the drags on Saturday. Course I COULD go along and steal me a car and go to the swap meet instead, hmmmmmmmm.

The Leadsled Spectacular

Good morning Everyone!

Hard to believe it's been nearly two weeks now since Mike and I went to Salina, Kansas for the Leadsled. As most of you know, Mike and I are big custom fans, and this show is KKOA's (Kustom Kemps of America) biggest show of the year, the last we heard there were 1,079 entries, the largest ever.

On Wednesday July 22, there was a kick-off party here in Wichita at Rockies house, who is a district club General for this part of the country. We all took a covered dish, and then spent the evening sitting around talking and taking a good look at the cars everyone drove to the event. The first thirty or so pictures were taken during that party. A lot of those folks drove up to Salina, Thursday July 23rd, which was the first day of the show. The rest of us went up Friday morning in the caravan, which was about twenty cars and a couple of trailers, I haven't figured out exactly what was in those trailers, but they were part of our caravan. We spent the afternoon at the Show and shine, then we jumped back in the car and drove over to the abandoned Air Force runway for the "Run what ya brung" Nostalgic drag races. There was a special area for the cars who chose not to race, so we parked Kool Kat in that area, and watched. Then early Saturday morning, it was back to the Show and shine. It sprinkled and downright poured a few times on Saturday monring, but it cooled things down a whole lot and made the show a lot more comfortable. When the clouds and rain finally went away, and the sun was coming out, along with the high temps and himidity, Mike and I decided to follow the cooler weather home, back to Wichita.

Unfortunately for Mike and I, we had to come home on Saturday. Mike had just gone back to work after a month furlough, drawing unemployment during that time so our finanaces were a bit thin, we usually spend all four days of the show there, with both our cars, but this year we had to cut it short, we were there for 27 hours, so we made darn good and sure we had a whole lot of fun while it lasted. We usually take both cars, but decided to just take Kool Kat and leave Mama Said here to help cut down on expenses.

So, for those of you who would like to take a look at my photos, here is the site, and the instructions for bringing up the album.

When the site comes up, you will see a section on the left hand side in the center just under recently added pictures is a button saying leadsled spectacular 2009. Left double click that and ENJOY. Hope you have as much fun looking at them as I did taking them.

Let me know what you think once you look thru them. There was a lot of cars there, and so little time, so there are a whole bunch I missed, but these are what I saw that impressed me.

Old Parts, Rare Treasures.......

8/6/09......I learned as a boy to value all things that have a purpose, including often what one person may throw away, could be a treasure of sorts to those wanting it or in need. I remember old knee breeches as a little boy with holes in knee or butt, that I was proud of as my favorite of things with the patches my momma had sewed onto them making them still more useful.
...............Later in life as I reached adulthood, it became neccessary to drive motorcars, and I had never known any real wealth, it became first neccessary to learn to repair the old rigs I had had; and then neccessary to learn where to get the parts I needed. Of course old cars could use still useful old parts that seemed to have a much greater useful life then most things seem to today in our great throw away society...........
...............Soon I had become a collector of old Fords of the models I liked most, and collected many an old mid fifties pickup or panel, and later many an old Falcon to serve as a family car. Soon before I knew it, people started coming from far and near to view my available old parts for sale. I never got rich off of them, but I did supplement self employed income a little, and sometimes traded for parts hard to come by that I needed also. Some of my greatest prizes were gotten that way....
...............Today, though I don't deal much with my classic steel and rusty iron, but am proud that my sons have all learned something in regard to using things over and conserving otherwise still useful materials for whatever purpose they might find it useful.............

I have always loved old Fords........

8/4/09.......my first vehicle was a 1931 Ford Model A Standard Coupe. I bought it for $250. It wa such fun, and I got laid the second time in it in the spring of 66'. I gave it to my older sister and her husband when I went to Vietnam in the summer of 1969.

................When I returned from Nam, and recovered from my wounds for the most part, I eventually bought a 1956 Ford F-100 half ton pickup. That began a long journey into owning Ford pickups, and later Ford Falcons. I figured I needed a truck to work, and later figured I needed a cheap little economy car to haul my family around......

...............I guess I have owned alomost 40 Ford pickups and panels from 1948 to 1956, and almost the same number of Ford Falcons from 1960 to 1965. I know alot about each model of vehicle.

...............Now my own collection is reduced to my favorite 64 Falcon Futura Sport Coupe with a stock 173-6, and Dagenheim four on the floor. My old original 55' F-350 one ton pickup with a 10' box and a 239 Y block. And a gem I found out on the desert that it's former dying owner had abandoned, a 48' F-4 Step Van. And then lots and lots of parts, mostly Ford, and a few others.......

...............Now my 2nd son carries on the tradition of owning classic and historical Ford vehicles, and working on them and creating custom items. His current project a 1953-4 F-800 Diesel custom semi with fifth wheel tow capability. It looks pretty cool so far, though uses a lot of fuel. He used part of a 1953 Ford Firetruck , and part of a 1973 F-800 Cab -Over with Cummins Diesel. The newly chromed spotlights and airhorns on the roof look real cool. Please enjoy this Phoenix rising out of the scraps...........

1963 Studebaker Lark Cruiser

I bought a '63 Lark Cruiser at auction late last year. Paid all of $425 dollars for it and drove it under it's own power later that same day. Of course, it needed lots of refreshening as it hadn't been on the road since 1977 or so!
Being a car of the southwest since new, rust was minimal. Really only some surface rust and a few dents and dings from it's 46 years of life.
The engine's running nicely now - starts instantly. The brakes are all fresh and the big finned drums really haul it to a halt.
What it needed more than anything was alot of cosmetic attention. With the help of a pro bodyman and the fact that there's SO MUCH NOS parts still available for Larks - this thing's on it's way to looking like the grand dame she once was. Original factory upholstery on her seats, a factory NOS headliner, factory NOS door panels and a repro skin for the padded dash - she's gonna be a doll.

The Cruiser was the top-of-the-line sedan offering from Studebaker for '63. Studebaker venerable 289 engine (no, NOT made by Ford!) was standard and power steering and power brakes were the norm. The owner of this Cruiser ordered it special without the power options but WITH factory air conditioning.

Anyway, the doors were off so the door jambs could be painted proper and new weatherstriping installed. That's now done. This week the doors, hood, trunklid, go back on and then it's off for it's full paint job. After that, all the NEW interior stuff will go in, and the all new brightwork goes on. I'm hoping she'll be ready for the 1st International Drive Your Studebaker Day on July the 4th!

BTW, that color is Blue Mist Metallic. That's what this car wore originally.
