Welcome to "Alaska"!

This is a group where we can share our interest in Alaska--its people, scenery, politics, wildlife, weather, volcanic activity, and whatever else you can think of. Past residents, tourists, sourdoughs (oldtimers) and cheechakos (new residents)are welcome here, so grab yourself a stool and join into the conversation.

A couple of websites you might check out are the newspaper's www.adn.com/photos, www.adn.com/bears, and the NBC TV station's www.ktuu.com, which has stories and lots of links to interesting sites. Any other websites you'd like to share?

Stuff People in Anchorage Never Say

Here's a link to a funny (to Anchoragites at least) viral video that was on our local news tonight...

85 year old woman fends off Moose!

This is a great story...

view link

An agitated moose ran down and stomped a well-known Bush pilot from Willow, but he was saved when his wife grabbed a shovel from their pickup truck and whacked the big animal until it backed off.

Kodiak

Kodiak is having weather troubles, too..lots of flooding...the Police Department is asking people not to go out if they don't have to, and if they do drive, to NOT drive a small car! It's supposed to freeze later on, making things even worse!

Cordova, the marshmallow town

I saw on the news that Cordova, a town next to the Prince William Sound, has had so much snow that people have to dig out of their houses. One woman reported snow up almost to the bottom of her second-story windows. They have no place to put the snow if it's plowed. What to do??

Valdez snow

Photobucket

I got this from Facebook, posted by a friend, probably off the Internet and taken at Thompson Pass on the way to Valdez. The plows must be enormous!

Hi from fossilsue

Hi and Happy New Year to everyone here.

I have never been to Alaska but would someday love to visit. I live in New Brunswick, Canada ( on the Atlantic coast). BC and the pacific coast are 3000 miles west of me. The farthest north I have been is Edmonton, Alberta when we toured the Rockies.
I have always been fascinated by Alaska and believe it is in some ways similar to our northern territories in Canada.

View to Kenai Mountains

View of Kenai Mountains

A view across Turnagain Arm from the trail up to Bird Ridge. Have any of you climbed this? It's one of the early spring (we're talking May) trails that has little snow then. I've been to the ridge a couple of times, but have decided it's too dangerous for me, with poor balance. Some parts of the trail have loose gravel and are next to steep dropoffs. I watched my friend tumble down the trail, getting pretty bruised in repeated bumps. There's some boulder clambering to do high up that's a lot of fun, though.

Moss Campion

A wildflower that always makes me smile. This was on top of Bear Mountain up behind Mirror Lake near Eklutna north of Anchorage.
