New Month - Get Greener

The purpose of the group is to provide information for those interested in Greener Living, leaving the world a better place for future Generations.

From this point on, it will be the RULE here in Greener Living that we only supply a SHORT EXCERPT of an article you wish to share with the group.

Then you provide a LINK to the rest of the article, so that those interested can go to the article itself and read the remainder of it.

All links are to be posted as such, this is the link to the Eons Terms of Use – (www.eons.com/about/terms) which will show the address without the http:// which would only lead people to a “view link” which for security reasons we should not do.

We do not want to be in violation of copyright laws, and by posting the entire article, even if you give credit to the author is against copyright laws and the TOU here at Eons.

If these guidelines are not followed with any post from 6-4-08 on, they will be deleted to protect our group, Eons, and copyright laws.

Now remember that a lot of our members have been living Greener for some time, for others they are just starting out. So our suggestions, tips, ideas and thoughts are what we are doing, what we have read, or are thinking of doing.

Let us all help one another to make a difference, remember if we all did one thing, we ARE making a difference.

Be sure to look in the files sections for information shared, and jump on in, have fun with us, make new friends, and go GREEN!

GREENING YOUR HOLIDAYS

With the Holidays approaching, we can really make a difference by GREENING OUR HOLIDAYS ! Iam asking for good ideas that we can all share. Here are a few to start....

Replace older holiday lights with low-power versions.

Start a family tradition of wrapping gifts in the colorful holiday newspaper supplements (then recycle the wrappings).

Choose gifts that will not ultimately add to the waste stream, whether they're consumables like food or candles, handmade crafts, donations to a favorite charity, or electronic gift certificates to online stores.

Plan shopping trips in advance so you don't make extra trips to malls or grocery stores.

If you decorate a tree for the holidays, consider buying a live tree and planting it after your celebrations are done.

Less is more. Politely (and well in advance) agree not to exchange gifts with adult friends and relatives, and instead to do something meaningful together. Buy each child fewer gifts, but better ones.

Hydrogen Fueling Station in L.A.!

Honda recently opened the first hydrogen production and fueling station in the Los Angeles area that will support the company’s fuel cell vehicle development program. It will be used for hydrogen production, storage and fueling.

The station uses solar power to extract hydrogen from water, and also has backup electrical power to increase the hydrogen production capacity. A compressor pressurizes the extracted hydrogen and it is stored in tanks at the station, ENS reported.

Available solar power can produce enough hydrogen to drive a single fuel cell vehicle for a year.

“Fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fuel have tremendous potential to contribute to the goals of sustainable transportation systems and the use of renewable energy,” Ben Knight, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. vice president, told ENS. “The development of a hydrogen fuel infrastructure is as important as the development of the vehicles themselves.”

Knight said the station is the first of its kind in the world.

“This is the first hydrogen station established by an automaker to use solar energy to extract hydrogen from water and it will help verify more efficient hydrogen production methods as well as help us solve the challenges involved with hydrogen production and fueling stations for the future,” he said.

I came across this site view link and it's full of all kinds of quizzes and info. I found it lots of fun to browse through and maybe you will too if you haven't already discovered it that is.

Tip of the week:

The average household spends ten to fifteen percent of its annual electricity bill on lighting.

Install dimmer switches where dimmed lighting makes sense, like the dining room and hallways. Any light bulb dimmed by 25 percent (including incandescent) will use roughly 20 percent less energy. Dimming one 75-watt incandescent by 25 percent for only 4 hours a day will save you 30 pounds of carbon over the course of the year.

Save even more money with dimmable CFLs, which last up to ten times longer and use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs.

This post might be a little early, but just a reminder. If you buy Christmas lights, or anything like that for Christmas from China, that has been painted, be sure to wash your hands throughly, after touching. There is lead in most of their paints.
I bought new Christmas tree lights last year, and there was a warning about lead paint, in the box.

I made my cheshire cat costume [a group of us did Alice in Wonderland at work this year] out of flannel. I cut off the tail. Now I have really cool pajamas and a (matching) draft guard for my back door. A dramatic play area at the daycare center has a nifty hood with cat ears and matching mitts. How's that for recycling?

Whenever I talk about all natural or home made cleaning products the response is always, “does it work?”. The short answer is ABSOLUTELY.
