New Month - Get Greener

The purpose of the group is to provide information for those interested in Greener Living, leaving the world a better place for future Generations.

From this point on, it will be the RULE here in Greener Living that we only supply a SHORT EXCERPT of an article you wish to share with the group.

Then you provide a LINK to the rest of the article, so that those interested can go to the article itself and read the remainder of it.

All links are to be posted as such, this is the link to the Eons Terms of Use – (www.eons.com/about/terms) which will show the address without the http:// which would only lead people to a “view link” which for security reasons we should not do.

We do not want to be in violation of copyright laws, and by posting the entire article, even if you give credit to the author is against copyright laws and the TOU here at Eons.

If these guidelines are not followed with any post from 6-4-08 on, they will be deleted to protect our group, Eons, and copyright laws.

Now remember that a lot of our members have been living Greener for some time, for others they are just starting out. So our suggestions, tips, ideas and thoughts are what we are doing, what we have read, or are thinking of doing.

Let us all help one another to make a difference, remember if we all did one thing, we ARE making a difference.

Be sure to look in the files sections for information shared, and jump on in, have fun with us, make new friends, and go GREEN!

Solar Power

Plastic Snack Bags

I admit it, I still use plastic sandwich bags for my husbands lunch that I pack every night. But, I do use the smaller plastic snack bags for when I pack small amounts like walnuts, pretzels, baby carrots etc. Using the sandwich size bag for a small amount is more practical, less expensive and better for the environment.

When I send leftovers from the dinner the night before I use the Pyrex left over bowls that are made of glass, and just have the plastic lid. The glass is healthier and I am cutting down on plastic bags when I don't send a sandwich.

Commercial Buildings Waste Energy

Ever notice the commercial buildings you enter? I have noticed for years the big gaps between double doors letting the air conditioning & heating out. Stayed at a motel in Sedona a couple of years ago and there was enough space at least 1/2 inch between the bottom of the door and the threshold that just about anything could crawl under - and it went directly to the outside.

If business and the markets are so wise about money I wonder why they allow such shoddy workmanship - they lose so much money due to wasting gas and electricity.

scary thoughts

If we did have something happen here like a bad earth quake we would be prepared. We live in the country and the pantry is always full. I have enough fuel to run our generator and back up generator for a minimum of a year and we have an ample water supply. We are also well armed (hey it's Oregon). My first thoughts concerning this was armed thugs trying to take my stores. This is what we are, if anything, over prepared for and I am very confidant we could defend our house and property but what if the people coming down the road are unarmed and starving. That throws a wrench in the gears. Will we have compassion? It scares me because a lot of us have been to those places where we became numb to death and I think it could just as easily happen here.

A trucker friend who hauls groceries to a couple different big cities in California told me he makes a trip every three days to some of the bigger outlets. In other words those cities have approximately 4 or 5 days worth of food in stock.

I'm going to try to end this post on a funny note. If something happens and you come to my house and I'm gone, I suggest you eat the 2009 canned green beans last as I'm not sure I pressured them long enough.

Free Bring Your Own Bag Reminder

We all know the harmful effects of plastic bags on our environment both on our planet and its animals. The momentum around reusable bags is strong and continues to grow with everything from incentives to legislated bans for single use plastic bags. Bringing your own bags is such a simple action and one that can have a huge impact on the environment. That being said, change is difficult and the biggest challenge for most people is remembering their bags when they shop.

ConservingNow.com, an online community of earth friendly individuals, is offering a FREE car window static cling to help remind you to bring your bags. It also has the added benefit of demonstrating your commitment to the environment to others. If you or someone you know forgets their bags, go to www.conservingnow.com to get your free static cling. Together we can make a difference!!!
