WELCOME

To All 911 Emergency Dispatchers:

I wanted to take the time to welcome you all here. We are about to begin the winter season of 2010. I appreciate all that you do in your lives and your careers. You all help keep this country moving and your officers protected. Too often, none of us recieve the respect and the appreciation that we are due.

To those that have come here to visit, please understand that this is a group devoted to Emergency Personnel and Emerrgency Personnel ONLY! If you are a 911 Dispatcher, you are welcome here and we encourage you to join our group. We try to share pertinent information that will help us to better do our job and to also protect ourselves.

Please enjoy our grouop and contribute ideas and please please share the things that make our job enjoyable and things that will make us laugh. Our jobs can be serious enough. Let's share the "funnies" in our lives. We all need to smile and laugh more often!

Have fun and as one of my favorite TV programs used to say, "Let's all be safe out there".

2010-2011 Flu Season

2010-2011 Flu Season
(Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

The 2010-2011 flu season officially began three weeks ago on 1 October. Although epidemics of influenza occur every year, the timing, severity, and length of the outbreak depends on many factors, including what flu viruses are spreading and whether they match the viruses in the vaccine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), during the last flu season (2009-2010) the world experienced the emergence of the H1N1 virus (sometimes called the “swine flu”). This virus caused the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting citizens and emergency personnel against this potentially serious sickness. “While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.

There are additional preventive measures that you can practice to avoid infection, such as good health habits (e.g., quit smoking), frequently washing hands, avoiding sick people when possible, and antiviral medications if prescribed. More Seasonal Flu Information is available to assist you in prevention and protection efforts to maintain your health and the health of your families and your neighborhood.

HEADS UP... ALERT

HEADS UP ALERT!!!! HEADS UP
posted less than a minute ago
Today I received a catalog from FINGERHUT advising I had been PRE-APPROVED FOR CREDIT.

The front cover (black background with wide yellow banner) had spot for an attached credit card.

IF there was a credit card attached to the cover, it was no longer there. However, the catalog has my name, addy, customer number and a catalog number in at least two places.

I've reported this situation to the state police at/about 1610 hours today's date of 2012-1-06. (DispT.)

I have been doing a lot of checking.... PLEASE, PLEASE...be advised that if anyone uses the numbers assigned to you, you will be billed and held responsible for the amounts and interest... verified

Catalog can be years old and the above WILL STILL APPLY. verified

I called Better Business Bureau.... Company has had numerous complaints and per the BBB "closed down"... per BBB recordings (between 1600 and 1700 hours today's date)

This coming Monday, I will call the KY State Attorney General's office and the Owsley County Prosecutor.

As always with this type of post, I understand if the M/M's of the group remove it.

Hear No Evil: A Dispatcher’s View on Officer Safety

view link

Imagine yourself in a situation where co-workers’ or friends’ lives, as well as the lives of citizens, are being threatened. Now imagine you have no weapons, no physical or visual contact, and can only listen to the events unfold. How would you feel? Would you feel helpless? As an emergency communicator, I have found myself in that very situation, feeling helpless because I cannot see the officers, the officers aren’t talking, and I am totally in the dark.

This is a very good article. I encourage you all to link to it and read it. We have all been there.

From all of us to all of you, We want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!!! May God Bless us all!

National EAS Test Toolkit Published

With the day for the big national Emergency Alert System (EAS) test creeping up on us, FEMA has published a "toolkit" to help local and state public safety officials prepare themselves and their public for the test. The main purpose is to minimize undue public concern or misunderstanding about the test.

There's certainly potential for concern or misunderstanding. This is the first time ever EAS has been tested nationally. So, on November 9th at 2pm (Eastern), virtually all broadcast and cable programming in the U.S. will be interrupted at once with those attention-getting tones. So, imagine a listener or a viewer trying to change channels or stations to get away from the test...only to find it everywhere they tune. And, unlike the typical tests they may hear or see at random times, this one will be long...more than three minutes in length. If people don't realize that it's really a test, what will they do? They'll call YOU - 9-1-1 operators and emergency managers.
