He is making it very obvious that he will completely disregard military advice from those with lots of knowledge and experience.
Also, does it bother anyone else that this man cannot (under any circumstances) admit that he is/was wrong? The surge worked. Everyone except Obama agrees about that. He refuses to agree with that assessment.

Arrogance has nought to do with listening to others, unless, they agree with his ambition.
I hope the people voting for BHO are not allowed to vote for the pilot of the next plane I fly on. They will pick some glib talking, tall, dark and handsome guy who never took a flying lesson in his life who will say, "I am looking forward to being your pilot." So why would anyone one want a person who never was in the military or commander of anything in his life to be the Commander in Chief of the most powerful military force on earth? Beats me.
When OB isn't giving a speech and his replies are not rehearsed, he seems nervous when asked questions he didn't expect or doesn't like. He did stutter a lot, trying to get his thoughts together. What happens if we have a real emergency and he need to speak and make a decision, immediately?
Yes, he does stutter.
Yes, it bothers me that he downplays the surge.
So- he says he will not be boxed in to stating he will either follow a time-table no matter what or follow a policy of saying he will rubber-stamp whatever the military recommends.
Sounds good to me. Sounds like 'do my best to get the combat troops out as fast as is reasonably possible'
Sounds better than an open-ended commitment based on as-yet-undefined 'conditions on the ground'
Neither can be specific-- how can you be specific about what you will do in a situation that is volatile? You can just lay down your starting premise-- staying or leaving. I'll take leaving with the understanding that things can change.
Oh- cant help it... there is a mandatory retirement at 65 for commercial pilots :-)

I pondered reactions by all three frontrunners when the '3 am phone call' stuff was the rhetoric du jour.
McCain would call in advisors.
Clinton would, also.
Somehow, I get a picture of Jim Bakker in tears under his desk, for Obama - extreme visual, yes but I am not confident in his decision making abilities in crisis.
I only have the one vote..
