REPOINTING AND SEALING A BRICK CHIMNEY

I have a chimney which needs repointing, and have gotten several few estimates. But there seems to be a question whether or not to weatherproof and seal after the repointing is done. I'd appreciate hearing others comments on "to seal, or not to seal". Comments?

We recently repointed certain areas of the outside of the brick buildings that I live in. We had bid out the job and the selected contractor had put a bid in for the repointing and the sealing as too seperate costs. When we spoke with the mason and asked about what the benefits of sealing the bricks were, he couldn't give us an answer good enough to justify the extra cost. And if I remember correctly he mentioned something about having to remove the sealant if you ever needed to repoint again (perhaps in other areas). We decided to forgoe the sealant. The buildings have been here for almost a hundred year without being sealed, we figure the could last another 100 with out it being added now.

thanks for replying tag. that is exactly what I was thinking. you've just confirmed it, and I've decided to do only the repointing.
