Home gardening is one of the most rewarding endeavors one may approach. We live our contemporary lives in the fast lane without regards to our surroundings and we only learn about our contribution to our environment by our evening crash in-front of the tube.
Most go gardening in the produce department of the local grocery store and don’t have a clue about the production of those magnificent heads of lettuce that provide the mainstay of our favorite evening salad. Few have ever been introduced to the process required to bring up the veggies from dirt to the table. What it takes in effort and the rewards of providing a finished and editable product for healthy consumption.
One example is the depicted sandwich stacker pickle slices harvested from my garden and processed in our kitchen. The seedlings were planted in small pots in our shop and nursed to a healthy start under a heat lamp. The young plants were transplanted in the garden and subsequently, here we have a delicious addition to our table. No threat of contamination or genetic alterations, just plain good wholesome food for the table.
These eight cucumber plants and twenty-eight quarts of pickles, along with, numerous other provisions for our family to enjoy in their favorite salads or simply peel one and eat it fresh! We have harvested approximately fifty-four pounds of cucumbers from these vines and the season is about half finished.
Space is not an initial consideration because many people with limited space have nurtured high production gardens in small flower beds. The only limitation is how high your imagination can soar. Add fresh produce to your table and beauty to your ecosystem, even within a concrete biosphere.
Happy gardening!
