Loved the way things smelled after being hung outside. Not so pleasent of memories...Birds leaving a calling card. Or winters when the clothes were brought in frozen stiff.
We still hang our sheets out in the summer, they seem to smell sooooo good.
When I was growing up we always hung our clothes on the line. With energy costs what they are we may go back to this.
We lived in a building that had clotheslines, i loved the way the clothes smell and how the sun dried the clothes so fast.
And, I just had a thought.... why is it when you hang wet clothes out to dry, they smell good...but, when the kids or your dog come inside wet, they smell so bad? Why is that?
Up until I hurt my back I still hung some things out on the line. Now I dont even have a clothes line. It would be difficult to carry heavy ,wet loads out. But I DO miss that smell of sunshine, especially on sheets. They havnt made a dryer sheet yet that can capture that!
I DONT miss the towels and jeans being so stiff,or all the added ironing!!

I just bought one of those lines that twirl around and you hang clothes on it I love it. It has been a very hot summer so things dry very fast. I can hang out my clothes and they will be done in one hour. They smell so good and are not wrinkled either. So I don't have to iron anything. I hang them right up in our closets and no worry.
Epperson mentions that the clothes dry fast in the summer heat. Here in Texas they dry to darn fast. I remember years ago hanging diapers and the first were dry by the time I finished hanging the last of them. They did smell so much better, though.
I do not even have room for a clothes line now, but it would be nice to have that good, fresh smell again. For other reasons, I prefer using a dryer still.
I CAN REMEMBER RACING TO THE BACKYARD TRYING TO GRAB THE CLOTHES WHEN THE RAIN CAME.
Many people still hang their clothes out to dry. It is cheaper and they smell better. It takes only a litle longer in the summer. Naiche
