WHO TAUGHT YOU TO SWIM?

I never learned to swim because of a water phobia that I don't even remember. But I was told that I almost drowned in the Suez Canal. The ships would dock around there and we had to use small boats to get on board. I was about four, and my mother handed me over to the sailor, he thought that my mother was still holding me and my mother thought that he was, plop I went, they were both wrong. Ever since then I have a water phobia. I can't have it anywhere near my nose. Therefore, I never learned to swim. I can dog paddle a bit, but that is in very shallow water. Many people have tried to teach me, but like with ice-skating, no one ever succeeded. Did you learn on your own, or did someone teach you.

I taught myself to swim.

How? Did you just jump in the water and swam, or did you sink and fight for life and then learn to float? I really am amazed when someone can do something on their own when I am petrified to death. I guess that I will have to get over that fear. Kudos to you, but please tell me how and where you learned?

I first started out swimming with a tube in shallow water.
When I was confident in my swimming skills,I swam in deeper waters.
Eventually,I swam without my tube.
I taught my brother the same way.

This is a funny story. I never did learn. My parents sent me to the Y for swimming lessons one summer. In those days all the boys (8 to 10 YO) had to swim naked. We were all lined up on the side of the pool and the instructor came in. She was a young woman about 18. I was so embarrassed I went home and refused to go back.

Well I thought it was funny. If it happened now they would never get me out of the place. Maybe I'll go back and sign up for lessons again.

My older sister pushed me into the water and held my head under it. I started to fley my arms and legs and that's how I made the Swimming Champs in High School.

Forgot to tell you all, my older sister was taught to swim by being thrown into a lake by my father. She almost drowned, but my mother saved her and then they sent her for swimming lessons.
