Cleaning Out The Harddrive

Im thinking about selling my laptop. How do I clean out the harddrive? I purchased a systems disc when I bought the computer. Do I or the buyer load this to get the system up and running?

Ahh..first of all, what kind is it and what do you want for it?

I would simply delete any personal folders and such on the drive and make sure the OS remained intact. I doubt that people would know what names you used for those folders, etc.....

Just a thought, get back on the price, though!

The only real way to be sure no one ever sees your data again is to physically destroy the hard drive platters. I've bought a couple of used boxes from companies and found interesting stuff on them. From porn to financial statements...lol.

That being said HonestJohn's suggestion, dban, is the product I use on my own and my customer's machines when it comes time to pass them along. Wipe it, reformat and reinstall.

I have used Ultimate Boot CD for many years ( UBCD link ). It includes DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) as well as dozens of other utilities. And just like DBAN, it is FREE.

Here is some reading material on HDD security for those nights when you just can't get to sleep, but it is informative.

You want to clean, really, really clean your hard drive. You have to format is “10 times“… This is the military clean method. Then reload the OS. All previous signatures are all gone…. Nothing left to doodle over.

Know what you mean about power failure. Just had surge protection on the whole house from the power co. today. two weeks ago we had 3 outages in one day, and bad storms almost every day for two months.
Best Buy wants $129 to clear out the drive and reset the OS. by time I pay that Im not going to get bad very much when I sell it.
