Welcome Patricia.
I certainly don't have the answers...and you are not alone. But that doesn't help -- you need a job, and you need it now.
If you haven't already, go over the newest books, get the information from the State, and keep your faith that things will work out. Read some of the posts through Eons, which are helpful.
I have always tailored my letter and resume exactly to each opening, although when the jobs are in the state system, I think it is almost impossible to get through to being #1. Perhaps try other areas of management and expertise.
Welcome again. There is good support to find throughout the Eons groups.
There are many jobs listed on WAHBOOM and Rat Race Rebellion. I see my Posting is right below yours. There are many work at home jobs -- lots of Professional Jobs. I work as Tech Support, was trained for it by Cloud 10 who contract through Nucomm and they have Comcast Cable. No, I have no experience as a techie. I am shocked I am still there, 3 months later (April 23). $8.50 hour -- after two months $9 -- but I am bringing money in.
I always told my children when they were 18 or so -- it is better to make minimum wage than no wage.
You being a professional, check out the daily jobs on WAHBOOM -- nothing but professional jobs. Then there are the call center jobs. Pay is like I stated above.
But if I can do it and with no degree except high school, 90% of any older persons can do it. I am just your average C+ person.
There are many work at home jobs and take it from me, I am working. Now, if you are waiting for your particular field on the higher end, well, good luck but in the mean time, there are all types of administrative support jobs, many, many call center jobs.
If you are disabled, there is your State employment service where you can get certified and work for places like IRS at home. But doctor must sign form.
So, I say to all, there is no excuse to not be working. It is up to you. Oh yeah, if you are disabled, they will even help you buy a computer and get you going.
Good luck to one and all. Read my posting.

I work 30 hours a week as a tech support and company is Comcast. Yes, I am contracted out -- just as if I worked for a temp agency. But I am working.
My name is Art and my contract ended on June 27th, so I am out of work and it might be months before I find work. I am a software developer. I went on-line and applied to several jobs and had 3 interviews over the last 3 weeks. I thought the age thing might be effecting me at the interviews, so I told them (1) I want a job were I can use my skills. (2) I do not intend to retire, I want to keep active.
I do not see a short term/quick fix for the wrong ideas that employers might have about older workers.
I think that a group such as Eons might have enough talented people to put together something that could spell out the advantages that the older workers bring to an employer.
A list such as:
Older workers take less time off, tend to be more loyal to the company, bring more 'soft' skills to the workplace.
Many businesses do not seem to recognize that economic growth is clearly linked to the employment of older workers.
Even AARP does not recognize this, their job site is a joke.
I am taking a college course now called business communication and one thing I learned about resumes is the need to use "keywords" since many companies use scanning software that looks for those keywords. The words will vary from company to company so I can't give you a magic list, but it would be a good idea to do some research and find out what keywords will cause your resume to land in the pile for further consideration.
I think one thing that causes employers to overlook seniors is that they think they can't afford them. They see the value of the experience that an older worker can bring to the table, but they also see $ signs related to that experience. That's why they like to hire the younger people. They like to get 'em cheap and bring 'em up the way they want 'em.

Many corporations also like knowing that when they hire a new person, they won't be eligible for Social Security and the company pension plan in 10 to 12 years. In addition, those nearing retirement will be angling for a higher salary or hourly wage right away, trying to boost their income to raise their retirement check.
Look for a business you can start and go self-employed. The job market will always be tough for older workers. Go self-employed and don't give employers the satisfaction of turning you down.
