YOU DON'T NEED A STOVE TO GET BY

Buy a countertop double burner, you can find these at Wal-mart, Joeyz Shopping Spree etc., they are just 2 coils like an electric stove has and the unit sits on top of your countertop and plugs in, not very expensive either. So...if your stove gives out on you and you are short on funds, this is a viable alternative. If you have a toaster oven, you can use that for cooking burgers etc. and just doing veggies on the double burner.

I don't use my stove much.. I use my microwave for cooking everything but a large turkey..... Your idea is a great one.....

Hi. This post made me smile. I stopped using my stove almost entirely unless I'm cooking a large meal for company. I use a toaster oven, a microwave, an electric teapot to make tea (boils water lots faster than on the stove), and a Foreman Grill. I only use the stove other than for a party if I have a stir fry or such. I love the idea of a 2-burner!

Also, a crockpot can do almost anything an oven can, including baking yams etc, and costs less to operate.

i had to laugh at the timeliness of this post. i have a new electric range (15 months old) and last night i turned on a pot (or so i thought) to make spaghetti for a large crowd. the burner never got hot! the clock and lights work - but not the heating elements! i fortunately have a toaster over, microwave oven and a gas grill out back. well, on such short notice we ordered pizzas and i threw a salad together.

living in Florida, i guess you know i'll be cooking outside for most of the year. LOL i am NOT investing in another new range - (i'm trying to hold on to the house until the market turns -- hopefully i can sell with the next two years!). going tomorrow to buy the "hotplate" as we always called them.

just do a google on "solar powered ovens" and make your own grid-free oven. Path to Freedom is my favorite, see view link

Or check out view link and urbanhomstead.org view link

Treehugger.com is FULL of good ideas too.

one trick I have been doing is:
In the winter I boil the water using the electric teapot (hot water heater)
as gas is more expensive, in the summer when electricity is high, I switch and do the boiling water in the teapot on the stove
then I place the required boiling water in a saucepan for cooking.

Of course these do not take the place of sun tea.

Oh, Sun Tea! A wonderful free (almost) summer treat.

Sun Tee, ahhh, I had forgotten about that, thanx for jogging my memory. That used to be so popular.

I own a crock pot as well, I have never used it though, I guess it would be good though in this weather, it would save on heating up the house with the stove. I just have to get up very early to turn it on, to put the ingredients in. Perhaps I will try it on the weekend.

I actually bought one of those countertop double burners in case my stove went since my stove is around 20 years old.

Irish, sounds like you tripped a switch but then that would just be too easy wouldn't it?
I am an oven user and love my oven. Please don't ask me why, I don't know. My mother was the best cook and she used that little toaster oven for everything even pies. I can't quite get the hang of it but guess I need to get a better one than the ones I have tried to use before.
