bizarre questions

Over the holiday this guy was talking about a runner who is a below the knee amputee who uses this high tech prostheses that at every step springs him forward. He had to sue to gain entry into the Para Olympics in Peking. This is where my thoughts get a little bizarre. Let say he runs a 10.7 second 100 meter. That will be a world record. Do you think in the competitive world of track and field able body runners will seek “elective below he knee amputees to gain fame and a medal? Would Nike come out with their own brand with a swoosh engraved in the metal?

Yes, there are athletes whose values are that warped. And Nike would do anything to, with, or for, anybody to get it's swoosh on the victor's stand.
IMHO

I think that's correct. It was brought up earlier in the media if this was a fair game... say the athlete lost his limbs by means other than elective and was given these "prosthetics"... would it be fair?

Our bodies burn energy according to the exertion of body fat. That includes limbs. When one trains he's working to maximize the energy based on his body weight and fat. If one loses 25% of there mass, that is less mass to train to use energy efficiently. In other words it's like a runner traveling 25 % of the 100 meters in a moped. Or a swimmer with fins. Prosthetics change the whole dynamic of how one trains the body to burn fat.

Another stupid question might, this if allowed, might it lower the use of performance enhancing drugs instead they will have performance enhancing hardware?

Remember Roger Maris and the infamous asterisk? So, even if he breaks a record, it can be in a separate category....don't see why it's open for debate...the fact he has the confidence and ability to run should be the focal point....after all we gonna tell all these returning vets from Iraq, with prosthesis they are "second class citizens" ?
