Do you believe that there are "mistakes" in life? Or, Do you believe there is a valid reason why things happen when they do? If so, explain your theory.
I believe all things happen for a reason to teach us things, and if at once we don't succeed in learning the lesson being taught, it will come around again maybe in a different form, but the same lesson until we understand what is being taught. Any other belief, I've found brings on condemnation and the why's? where did I go wrong, and other things. We have to live at peace with ourselves and know there is a higher power in charge.
Oh, my Dog! Do I believe in mistakes!! I've become very adept at making them and not seeing that they are mistakes until the world comes crumbling down.
What I simply do not understand is the view that conjoins three thesis: (1) There is a God (or some kind of divine manipulator) (2) who designs things to happen a certain way to teach us certain lessons, and (3) we are free. Hello! There are no square circles!!
As they say, s*** happens. We all make mistakes and the rational, thinking human learns from the mistakes and takes steps to assure they do not happen again. The not so rational person keeps repeating the same mistakes hoping for a different outcome. I do not believe in the predestination theory so I think that mistakes are of our own creation or they fall under the s*** happens category.
I don't think there is a higher power in charge ... teaching me by my mistakes. I do believe we can make mistakes and that we can learn and grow from our mistakes. I certainly have done that.
"I've become very adept at making them and not seeing that they are mistakes until the world comes crumbling down."
That would be the definition of 'mistake'. If the world didn't come crumbling down, then it wouldn't be a mistake, would it?
I'm moving into a Random stance. Everything that happens is random. It does not occur to teach you a lesson. When you do something that is a 'mistake', it is possible that there is a lesson in it for you, but not that the occurrence was specifically there for that specific lesson for you specifically. All it means is that you screwed up. Better luck next time.
Unless, of course, you believe in Karma. In which case forget everything I just said.
Mistakes? Well, I have surely made my share...and more. The idea of "mistakes" kind of begs the question about what criteria we use to define a "mistake." The original notion of "sin" means "missing the mark." A "mistake" to me would only have relevance in social, economic, financial, political, etc. terms unless the person making the "mistake" has some other goal, a "mark" which would define the nature of the mistake.
When I look back at different events in my life, would I have chosen to do some things differently? Yes.
Was there an important lesson to be learned even from choices I regretted? Yes.
But I also see a third category. There were opportunities missed that were simply opportunities missed. And there were some things I could have done differently. In many of those cases, there was not necessarily a better or worse choice, just a different choice, and of course my life would have gone differently had I chosen differently at any of those intersections.
I don't believe in mistakes just learning experiences. I don't know about you, but I'd sure like to go back and undo some of those learning experiences.
