I'm needing some straight talk..

Today McCain says he will balance the budget by the end of his first term. As someone concerned about the deficit this caught my eye. So I went looking around a bit....

There was a report from the GAO that said this could be possible if the was no renewal of Bush tax cuts.

But McCain wants to keep those cuts.

The report added that this might work in good economic times with a booming economy.

I dont see signs of that.

The war is costing a lot; ending that would help balance the budget.

Well, we know the candiadates' differences there.

We could drastically cut Social Security and Medicaid benefits and save a ton of money. How do you all feel about that?

I couldnt find any clear plans submitted by McCain.

I've always felt that everything would be fine if McCain was elected--at least perhaps some honesty for a change.

Twice in 24hr the straight-talk express seems to have made a detour. (I'm not talking about changing positions) Twice in 24hrs McCain has come close to... well, not a lie... but pretty close.

Anyone with infor on his plans for the deficit?

Unfortunately, McCain's answer would be to cut Social Security and Medicare. Then he'll go after the VA.

This country has had deficits a number of times. Each time the Dems say something like "your children and grandchildren will have to pay for this". I never had to pay for the deficits my fathers generation faced. Our economy is cyclical, revenues rise and fall. It seems the only consistent increase is in government spending. Playing up budget deficits is the politics of fear. Sometimes your in debt, sometimes your not. That doesn't mean the country comes to a halt. If your really looking for straight talk neither the Republicans or the Democrats can balance the budget on the backs of American taxpayers. A prosperous economy and cutting congressional spending will. The president only submits a budget, congress approves it, and the spending to go along with it. That's about as straight as your going to get.

LadyEarth, why do you think McCain (a veteran) would go after the VA?

Dems increase taxes, OB promises to tax corporations making a windfall profit. ( Since when is 8% considered a windfall) The corporations pass on the tax to the consummers OR, they eat it up, make les sof a profit. UNIONS and others with pension plans sell their stock in the company. The company needs to make an adjustment, they lay-off workers and raise their prices even more. The consummers pay more for the goods so in retaliation, the Dems raise the taxes once more..Corporation goes out of business, lot of people unemployed. Seems easy to me!

Ladyearth, have you forgotten the Democratic congress in place for the last 5 deficit cycles? Didn't bankrupt us then, won't now.

Yes andiamo, I agree that the President really cant balance the on the backs of taxpayers... as you said.

My question was: McCain made this promise today. Point out. Promised. Not try, not aim... promised.
I am just looking to see if anyone knows how he plans to do this.

McCain already has voted against most bills to fund the VA. He wants to make a mess of it like they had at Walter Reed by privatizing. He ignores the fact that the VA is a genuine American success story. It delivers the best health care in the country.
