This is a double-edged sword. Ignoring the evacuation order and staying in his home put himself and his family in danger. It also puts firefighters in danger since they now have people to worry about that shouldn't be there. It ended up OK for him but it might not work every time or for everyone. It's a very tough call.
He would have never had to make that call if the dead growth had been gone out of the woods and forests in this country. He would have had a home to come back to for dead growth is a fire hazard. He was willing to have the fire take his life so that his kids would be able to inherit the land after he passed away. That is a hero!
Environmentalists pay no mind to what the fires take away from people or who dies from them, by telling people not to get rid of dead growth - it fuels the fires in California and anywhere else. Here in Wisconsin you see alot of woods and forests that still have dry growth around, and if you try like my Uncle tried to do -getting rid of dead growth, he could have been fined for it. For the environmentalists came to his home and told him so with a cop in hand to write the ticket.
This would not have happened if the environmentalists would mind their own business instead of getting in the face of others. They are politically oriented. and in the process look how much land is lost, because of their idiotic ideas. I hope they like the look of desert, and smelling foul air for a long time. You sure don't hear much from them now. Do you?
And look at the jobs that could be had if the environmentalists would get out of the way - you could have people going into woods and forests of America getting rid of dead growth in all of them. People lose jobs because of them. Look at how much dead growth could heat a cabin in the winter months so people wouldn't have to pay for electric heat, with electric going up - people could use that wood, branches, etc. Art projects and the like, the list goes on and on. Idiots!
the Indians and Pioneers had it right in the beginning, they knew to clear the land for brush fires and all. I am sure they replanted or let nature take its course. If we could only learn from our mistakes and the environmentalists can be extrememist too, as they were in setting those huge fires to the developing millionaires home awhile back. The land belongs to all of us, not just individuals, I am talking about beaches, parks, natural forrests etc. Common sense and little watching over goes a long way.
Totally agree orchidlover - but we have people now-a-days that will listen to whatever people say to them and take it as the truth while their homes burn to ash. Some people can't think for themselves and that is a shame.
I love the Wild West of taking care of things and also during the Medieval periods of time. We seem in some ways going back to that time - maybe I'll see the past in my future.
If I don't die from a lack of oxygen - have you been in suburbs lately? I have and there are no trees in those new suburbs. My daughter had to plant a tree for there were none where she lived. Just the city trees which the city came and took off limbs and made it smaller now it looks like hell. It looks like some tree you would see in a horror film with someone hanging from it.
