INSIGHT INTO APPARITIONS

An apparition is a spiritualistic manifestation of a person or object in which a form not actually present is seen with such intensity that belief in its reality is created. The ancient and widespread belief in apparitions and ghosts (specters of dead persons) is based on the idea that the spirit of a man, or of any object, is endowed with volition and motion of its own. Apparitions, especially particular shapes attached to certain legends or superstitions, are often considered as premonitions or warnings. They may appear in any form and may manifest themselves to any or all the senses. The most evil apparitions are said to be those of persons who have died violent or unnatural deaths, those with guilty secrets, and those who were improperly buried. However, not all apparitions are believed to be dangerous; many, especially those associated with a particular religion, are thought to be signs of divine intervention.

An apparition, from Latin apparere (to appear), is in its literal sense merely an appearance—a sense perception of any kind, but as used in psychical research and parapsychology the word denotes an abnormal or paranormal appearance or perception, which cannot be explained by any mundane objective cause. Taken in this sense the word covers all visionary appearances, hallucinations, clairvoyance, and similar unusual perceptions. "Apparition" and "ghost" are frequently used as synonymous terms, though the former is, of course, of much wider significance. A ghost is a visual apparition of a deceased human being—the term implies that the ghost is the spirit of the person it represents. Apparitions of animals and even inanimate objects are also occasionally reported. All apparitions do not take the form of visual images; auditory and tactile false perceptions, although less common, are not unknown. For example, there is record of a house that was "haunted" with the perpetual odor of violets.

As a young child I often saw apparitions and described them to my mother, I recall my mother taking me to church and having the priest pray on me. After a while, I stopped "seeing" them with my eyes but I "saw" them with my psychic eyes. Have you ever had experiences like that? hat have you seen? Discuss...

Apparitions:
Many, usually visually, occaisionally olefactory. Pleasant and unpleasant. In one house that had various manifestations there was a little boy who sat at kitchen table(which was in its own alcove surrounded that windows on two sides and ti plants-which kahunas in Hawaiian Ritual blessings on 3 sides)and who seemed oblivious to the less friendly things in the house--this is when i knew there was more than one 'after' life--there are various 'planes' or dimensions. Once i saw an apparition of the Japanese planes that bombed Pearl Harbor...they looked so real i asked the friend i was riding with if there was an air show, i did not know we were that close to Pearl at the time...they surprised me as they came thru a pass. My friend did not see them, but told me that was where they had come from that morning. Occaisionally landscapes &/or wildlife that no longer exist at the locale, often that i did not know ever existed there until after i've done some research.

Ghosts:
The most visible ghost i ever saw was my first husband. He appeared 'in form' for about a year and when he finally got over the initial anger of my being right there was an afterlife we had lengthy discussions. But as he lay dying, the spirits of both his mother and his last wife were present--not fun as wife #5 had only heard Dad's side of things and was most unhappy about Gram being there until i explained some things to her. At the very end they were side by side near his bed as he breathed his last in my arms. My mother (wife #2, who had passed 10 yrs before him)put in only a brief appearence...more to give me moral support than to see Dad, she felt Gram and June could be the welcoming committee. i had to chuckle, Dad always said he wanted to be cremated because he didn't want a bunch of women weeping over his grave, and instead we gathered to help him pass over.
There are both a cat and dog who come visit. Ones who were extra special in life.

i was extremely fortunate that my parents were willing to have rational discussions with me about the 'paranormal', both having had some experience of it themselves. My mother had premonitory dreams. It was never discussed as a problem.
My ability to be alone was often seen as problematic, not 'healthy, normal'. But dreams, ghosts...they were acceptable.

In my home growing up, "it" wasn't to be discussed or even mentioned. Only one time did my mother mention her sister precognition. Mom professed she a disbelief in apparition/spirts, until a certain event. Then when that event was mentioned told to shut up. Not nicely either.

One evening my daughter was lying on the couch and out of the corner of her eye she saw the ghost of a young woman in our hallway. When she turned to look directly at the ghost it disappeared.

About a month later my daughter noticed the ghost again and there was a young male ghost with her. My daughter was looking directly at them this time. The female ghost reached her hand out to my daughter and my daughter extended her hand out to touch the ghost and they disappeared again.

I asked my daughter if she felt afraid of them and she said no.

I have lived in this house for 20 years and for all those years there are times when I distinctly smell bacon frying. There has been no real bacon fried in this house since I've been here. Years ago when I first moved here my son asked me who the old lady was that was sitting on my toilet. There was no one there, no one in the house except he and I. Years ago in Texas I saw and conversed with a young man in a colonial outfit near an antique piece of furniture in a friend's home. When I told my friend about the conversation the back door slammed loudly and there was not a whisper of wind or anyone else in the house. I converse on a regular basis with loved ones who have crossed over that I was close to in life. This has never seemed unusual to me but it isn't something I talk to others about unless they ask. Thank you, all of you, for sharing.
