Obama offers New Proposal
Now this plan makes sense!
TOLEDO, Ohio - Democrat Barack Obama is calling for a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures and a two-year tax break for businesses that create jobs as part of a plan to heal the nation's ailing economy.
The presidential candidate says banks that participate in the federal bailout should temporarily postpone foreclosures for families making good-faith efforts to pay their mortgage.
He also called for a $3,000 tax credit for each additional full-time job a business creates. The tax break would end after 2010.
Obama also is proposing letting people withdraw up to $10,000 from their retirement accounts without any penalty this year and next.
The Obama campaign emphasizes that these ideas can be done quickly, either through executive order or legislation.

Fruit/veg of the week is JICAMA

Jicama is a crispy, sweet, edible root that resembles a turnip in physical appearance, although the plants are not related. Jicama has been cultivated in South America for centuries, and the vegetable is quite popular in Mexican cuisine. Jicama has a unique flavor that lends itself well to salads, salsas, and vegetable platters. The roots can sometimes grow to be quite large, although when they exceed the size of two fists, they begin to convert the sugars that give jicama its sweet flavor into starches, making the root somewhat woody to the taste.
Jicama is actually a legume, and it grows on vines that may reach 20 feet (six meters) in length. The vines tend to hug the ground, terminating in tubers that may grow up to 50 pounds (22 kilograms) in size, although the majority of jicama roots sent to market are approximately three to four pounds (1.3-2 kilograms) in weight. Before eating, the coarse brown outer layer of the jicama should be peeled to reveal the white inside.
When choosing jicama at the store, look for medium sized, firm tubers with dry roots. Do not purchase jicama that has wet or soft spots, which may indicate rot, and don't be drawn to overlarge examples of the tuber, because they may not be as flavorful. Jicama will keep under refrigeration for up to two weeks.
Jicama is excellent raw and is sometimes eaten plain. It can also be used as a substitute for water chestnut in Chinese dishes, in which case it should be thrown in right before serving. Jicama also appears in stews, juiced drinks, stuffings, and a variety of other recipes. In addition to having a unique flavor and texture, jicama takes flavor well, making it well suited to culinary experimentation. Jicama is a great source of vitamin c and is fat free—making it a superb on-the-go snack.
Levi Johnston
Yesterday, I was told by someone who has connections with a Washington, DC law firm that Klondike Barbie was vetted -- two days prior to the announcement of her selection -- and that the trip to Alaska was to buy a suit for Levi Johnston and to help him and the palin kids with clothes and grooming.

Tear Stains
Does anyone have a good way to get rid of tear stains? My little one has them really bad, she is starting to look like a raccoon.

Rethinking Compost
I have to admit, I have composting issues. It took me several times trying to get it to work.
When I tired the first time I put it as far away from the house as possible just because I was sure it would smell. There was no water sources near by so it was a failure. The next try was a little better until I started bagging all my grass clippings and threw them all in at once. I ended up with a smelly matted mess that was too heavy to turn. I just spread it out with a rake and it eventually decomposed.
It has been frustrating not to have enough stuff to compost but I was only trying to compost "good" stuff. Before reading more about Ruth Stout, I thought you should not compost weeds. I always bagged them up for yard waste pickup.
Dead leaves from my banana trees were alway thrown away too because of their large size. Now I am using them to mulch the base of the banana trees and will use them around my raised bed walk ways.
I guess I have always made composting more difficult than it really is.
