Up before the sun

Very Important Question...I am going to get my coffee and sit in my rocker on my deck. Question: Are sitting on a porch or a deck? I asked this question of someone the other day and he thought they were interchangeable. I was thinking we have decks in the west, y'all have porches in the east.
Regardless, I have done predawn chores, I hear the crickets outside, and the yips of two baby foxes who must be calling mama. Care to join me for the sunrise on my deck, uh porch?
Have a great Monday everyone!

Hard to say...I think of a porch as having a roof and spindle rails or solid, wood shingle enclosure on the lower part. A deck having posts and rails, possibly 'spindles' but no roof. Now out back, we HAD a 'stoop', about a 4x4 rotting wood pallet like creation by the back door. It was the first thing we replaced when we moved in. We replaced it with a much bigger version.

But, even though it has sunken posts (held with concrete) and is built like a deck, it pretty much JUST clears the ground in order to stay under the back door. There is a small overhang over the entrance that used to cover the little stoop. So...it's not a porch (like I have in front) and it's not really what I would call a deck!

What is it? I don't know LOL!

BooHoo for me. I don't have a porch or a deck, both of which I love.
I have a patio. Not covered or screened in. It is hot as blue blazes out there in the summer time. So it's early in the morning or late in the evening that I sit on my "porch substitute", the patio.

Hey Chrty. Welcome to the Porch.

We have a nice friendly laid back group of friends here. Hope you'll get to know a few. Grab a chair and make yourself comfy.
Oh yea, and what kind of porch do you have? Patio, Deck Stoop, Porch, or something else altogether?

Hi Chrty~

Great to meet you. Hope you can stay a while. My porch is a back porch and patio area. I don't have the front porch either, just this one we are enjoying now.

Anybody having major internet outages this morning? Mine is coming and going like crazy.

Steve, really enjoyed your post about our culture today.

I think there is a definate difference in a porch and deck.To me a porch is generally an enclose(with railings)place usually with a roof, and a deck can have railings or not and is generally open to the sky.i have a small porch now, just big enough for my wicker rocker and a small side table.but I have windchimes and hanging flower plants all around it.

Summerrain~ I think you just inspired me to clean that back porch off and put some rails up. It would still be in the back, and the front is what counts, but It would be a 'real porch'.

Mim~ No hope of roofing your patio? How about the retractable awnings? You need some shade where you live, G/F!

Anyone seen the yard sails? I think they look awesome. They make good shade.

@Mockrose-Yep, there is hope of roofing my patio. My husband would like to. I don't want to. I think it would block the sunshine coming into the house. And darkness in the house DEPRESSES me to no end.
The retractable awning idea does have a certain ring to it though. I think I could live with that.
I'm gonna shoot my husband an email right now and see what he thinks of the idea.
Thanks MockRose
