Golf Marathon

Getting ready for a September golf trip to Bandon Dunes, Oregon where we'll play/walk 36 holes of golf for 3 consecutive days. This requires a different kind of fitness. The calorie consumption is very high when walking, swinging, and looking for lost golf balls. I was surprised that the average round of golf consumes about 1900 calories depending on temperature, wind, hills, and length.

Today we played (walked with push cart) 38 holes (2 walking home) and burned about 3800 calories over 9 hours.

A challenging workout schedule has prepared me for 38 holes. I was more hungry than tired despite eating about 1000 calories during the rounds plus lunch.

My final drive carried around 300 yards, which is longer than all but a handful of the young studs at our course....

Gosh, I thought playing golf just involved riding around in one of those little carts drinking beer all day. I never knew it could actually provide some exercise.

Way to go, Rad!

Golf is a great social game and an excuse to drink beer for some. Pro golfers like John Daley have given us a bad reputation! He has lots of "fans" because so many golfers have the same problems. John's on his way to a short life unless he changes his smoking, drinking, coke hamburger and fries mentality.

On the opposite extreme there's Tiger Woods and Gary Player, who raised the fitness bar for all golfers. Gary Player's reputation as a fitness fanatic isn't well know. In his day it wasn't very popular as most of the pros drank and smoked. Player is/was a slight man, but he's in great condition. Tiger is NOT a slight man. He's 6'1" and a very powerful athlete. He probably would have made a great wide receiver!

I was being somewhat facetious. I know that Tiger Woods is in great shape. Even lifts weights.

Of course, the only two times I played golf in my life, I went the riding in the cart, drinking beer route. And strangely enough, I didn't do that well.
