looking for hikes

Hi all, is there anyone here who lives in the Longview area and can suggest some good dayhikes in my area. Most of my hiking has been restricted to Oregon for the last few years. With gas prices as they are I would like to start staying close to home.

nwhiker,

Which Longview are you at? The Cowlitz County or the Benton County? Mount St. Helen is East of I-5, take 503. Some of the trails are:
Sheep Canon Trail
Loowit Trail 216
Hummocks Trail
Blue Lake Trail
June lake Trail
Butte Camp Trail
Soda Peaks Lake Trail 133
Goat Mountain Trail
Sasquatch Loop Trail

I have never hike any of those trails. To me, North Cascade is prettier with thicker woods and green covers. If you go north, Mt. Rainier has many trails. A good site to go to is the Washington Trail Association site www.wta.org

Some trails might have been damaged by the storms. I usually read the trail reports on the month I want to go to see the conditions. A few of them are execellent after heavy rain, but no good in the Summer when it is dry. It depends what you like.

Scroll down to the Mt. St. Helen section. It has about 7 trails. I think Mt. St. Helen is better for spring and early fall when it is not that hot. There is hardly any tree there. Mt. Rainier is much better for the Summer and there are many more trails. It is further driving. You can camp at MT. Rainier and make it a two day trip to worth the gasoline cost. I think it costs $5 to $10 a night for a camping spot. It is the cheapest way to have a place for a night.
