Untold Story

Doris Day
New bio — — 'Untold Story' of Doris Day
• • Born on 3 April 1924, Doris Day — — on screen, she was America's smiling, singing darling. But off screen, her husbands were not Rock Hudson and her life was no light romp.
• • During her years in the spotlight, Doris Day was always portrayed as happily married -- to third husband and manager Martin Melcher -- and loving mother to son Terry. But the real story couldn't be further from the truth, according to David Kaufman's expansive new biography, "Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door." captivated Instead it's a sad story -- partially told in the actress' 1975 autobiography -- of a talented woman who was unloved by her father, pushed by an ambitious stage mother, with four failed -- and mostly loveless -- marriages, who never got what she wanted: simply to have a happy home life.

• • Doris Day snubs Oprah
• • David Kaufman, author of new book "Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door," tells USA Weekend that "Pillow Talk" star Doris Day lives as a virtual recluse, although she keeps in touch with friends by telephone.
• • Doris Day, 86, even turned down lunch with Oprah Winfrey.
• • Kaufman said Winfrey tried to uncancel the lunch by driving up to Day's house, but even then, "Doris wouldn't see her."

I think the only route to a peaceful and contented life is to not seek happiness. Even the simplest desire such as "A happy home life" is likely to lead to frustration and discontent, since even simple desires often don't come to pass. It is sad that Ms. Day never got what she was looking for out of life. A lot(most) people don't. The thing to do is drop all desires and just take whatever life gives you and be happy with that. It's not exactly like Ms. Day is living under a bridge somewhere, cold and hungry. Many would change places with her..."happy home life" or not.

I think a lot of people run around the world being unhappy because they have no idea what they want. I used to do career counseling for professionals and I would give them the first assignment - take a piece of paper and write down 25 things that you want and every person was hard-pressed to find it.

In that book, Bridges of Madison County, the guy says "The old dreams were good dreams; they didn't work out but I'm glad I had them..." I think we get caught up in our lives and stop figuring out what we need to be happy so we float along unhappy. I really believe happiness is a decision you make and not an event.

She was just too darned soft spoken, you know that Doris Day breathiness, (I'm forty years old but really just a virgin and a airhead), persona that she perfected, (what was that all about, and just who did she think she was she fooling?) A real woman gets what she wants by working hard and grabbing it! Happiness is not a goal but something that comes intermittently, to be sure.
