Buddhism and the Environment

With the fires burning up and down the Central Coast the smoke and ashes are touching down in my yard reminding me of how much is being lost....

Today finds me reading Daido Loori's instruction on the Ninth Great Precept...Actualize Harmony-Do not be angry.... and the environment.

By being patient we will find that the things we think get in the way are not really in the way. By allowing the natural cycle to be, we avoid unnecesary grief.

A story he tells is about how the previous owner of the monastary's property had eliminated all the beavers because they were eating all the trees. When Daido and his group moved in two new beavers showed up and they resumed the feast...including a special weeping willow planted by his students for Daido to sit under in his old age.

With the stream blocked, a pond formed, fish and ducks came. This brought the fox and the osprey and and a new environment came to life...after a while the beaver moved on, the dam fell apart. The pond disappeared and the trees grew back ( for the time being)...including his beautiful willow..

Nature knows how to maintain itself, creating and defining over and over.....

Peace

What a lovely and profound teaching.

Thank you for sharing with us what you're learning from these teachings of J.D. Loori,Roshi.

The monks at Tassajara are also reminded that THEIR
center was begun from the ashes of a previous fire
and that fire is a natural occurance throughout those
hills and canyons.
In the process, we learn so much from these experiences:
(not to build houses in the woods :-) kidding..)
Compassion, loving kindness, charity, acceptance, working for the good of another...the way of natural life...letting go..

Namaste,

I like that teaching. I'm always dismayed when people around here start talking about how they want to kill off the groundhogs (Dave and I have a special fondness for groundhogs).

I just said a prayer asking Kuan Yin to protect you, your loved ones and your home.
