Time on my hands

Hello writers,

A friend suggested that I should volunteer to edit, proof read or even write for an organization as a means of becoming proficient enough to earn some income in my spare time. There was a term for this activity but I have forgotten it. I'd like to work at writing with this group and perhaps make some contacts for future work. Please advise me on this matter. I think expository writing would be my choice as my imagination isn't active enough for story telling. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you on line and learning from you.

This is a good place to test your imagination. You might find you have more then you thought you did.

Want to test your editing ability? I have three raw book length stories in the files, test your skills. Do yourself a favor, before you edit a word, read the whole thing. The skill that is required most, and the most difficult to acquire, is the ability to go with the author's style, not over-editing for grammatical compliance, but knowing what NOT to change. With my work, there is usually a lot that needs spruced up in the way it's told, but most of the facts need to remain since they play into the story later. Sunny is a pretty good editor in her own right, so is Sah, they can give you tips. Sah once did it for a publisher so she really knows her way around it. Take a chapter or two, show me what you can do. They're completely raw, not spell checked or anything, so it would be a good test.

Sia - Toot has a very unique writing style. Once you have read his manuscripts, you'll start to see this. He has definite likes and dislikes, and if having him changes some of these means saving the planet, well we are all in trouble. I have gotten used to his style and like it. It's one of those things that grows on you. He's really good with action.

There is one thing I must warn you about - never, never, never edit any of his work adding semi-colons. Forget the rules - Toot is not a 'rules kind of guy'.

Welcome. We need you. What do you mean by expository writing?

Plat - expository writing is written to inform the reader about a particular subject. The writer must assume the reader has little or no knowledge of the subject and writes in a clear, precise manner the facts. Unlike creative writing, it isn't imaginative - but it needs to be written in an interesting way, not just simply stating facts about the subject.

Expository writing is about true subjects, a "Just the facts, Mam" style. The kind of thing you go to for information, not fun reading, for the most part. Often biographies are written in that style. Quality news stories are more or less that style, though they seldom go as deep. An article on some scientific advance, written for readers that don't have a scientific background would be one example.
