Did John McCain Lie About Being Tortured?

A BBC news story, titled, 'When John McCain was my captive' describes an interview with McCain's captor. Here's an excerpt:

"Navy pilot John McCain was shot down during a bombing raid over the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, in 1967.
He ejected from his aircraft and parachuted into a city lake. . . . From there he was taken to Hoa Lo prison, known to its American military inmates as the "Hanoi Hilton".

"Tran Trong Duyet was in charge of the notorious Hoa Lo prison - the place where Mr McCain says he was brutally beaten and tortured during five-and-a-half years as an American prisoner of war.

"I don't know how he'd react if he met me again," said Mr Duyet, flicking through old black and white photographs of himself and his American prisoners at Hoa Lo.

"But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners."

Mr Duyet reminisces instead about how he often summoned the future US presidential candidate to his private office for informal chats.

So is Mr Duyet implying that that Senator McCain lied about his treatment at the Hanoi Hilton?

"He did not tell the truth," he says.

"But I can somehow sympathise with him. He lies to American voters in order to get their support for his presidential election."

Omama- It doesn't matter to me that much. He was a POW and if people want to see that as a qualification for President, fine. I just don't.

I have probems with McCain for a number of reasons. His stance toward the war. His opinion regarding the rights of women. His statement that he will not have dialogue with enemies (particularly Cuba). His surprising lack of support for veterans. His lack of imagination in the development of policies do deal with modern, complex issues. And (not sure this is fair) that the man has not been interested in learning how to use a computer. Why does that freak me out so much?

Although it is curious that much of the rest of his military performance remains unknown except for some things going around in the liberal sites--- and I need to understan their bias too.

What I care about is past voting record and their plans and policies. And character. And the kind of person I want as MY President.

Obamama you haven't answered my question, How is our progress in Iraq now?
Byrd You didn't answere my question, what do we have to be afraid of?

Just Some of What Defines Barack Obama:

. He voted against banning partial birth abortion.

. He voted no on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.

. Supports affirmative action in Colleges and Government.

. In 2001 he questioned harsh penalties for drug dealing.

. Says he will deal with street level drug dealing as a minimum affair.

. Admitted marijuana and cocaine use in high school and in college. ( Who cares, we all did)

. His religious convictions are very murky. What were they before he decided to go into politics?

. He is willing to meet with, Hugo Chavez, Kim Jung Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

. Has said that one of his first goals after being elected would be to have a conference with all Muslim nations.

. Opposed the Patriot Act.

. First bill he signed that was passed was campaign finance reform and we see how that has worked out!

. Voted No on prohibiting law suits against gun manufacturers.

. Supports universal healthcare.

. Voted yes on providing habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees.

. Supports granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

. Supports extending welfare to illegal immigrants.

. Voted NO to making English the official language of the USA

. Voted yes on comprehensive immigration reform.

. Voted yes on allowing illegal aliens to participate in Social Security.

. Wants to make the minimum wage a 'living wage.'

. Voted with Democratic Party 96 percent of 251 votes.

. Is a big believer in the separation of church and state.

. Opposed to any efforts to Privatize Social Security and instead supports increasing the amount of tax paid.

. He voted No on repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax.

. He voted No on repealing the 'Death' Tax

. He wants to raise the Capital Gains Tax.

. Has repeatedly said the surge in Iraq has not succeeded and will pull the troops out the day he takes office.

. He is ranked as the most liberal Senator in the Senate today and that takes some doing.

Some here may think these are good positions, I don't

Well, andiano, I DO support many of those decision.

And one of the reasons, among others, is that I check out the reasons for them and the truth of a few others instead of copy and paste and do the 'shotgun' attack favored by some.

There were solid (to me) reasons for the votes from a constitutional and legal perspective. And, he is well-versed in the Consitution.

Me, I like the Constitution.

The difference here seemed to be-- do you up the benefits given to veterans and maybe have some leave the military early AND consider this might be somewhat counterbalanced by an increased incentive to enlist

or

Keep benefits lower and progressive to keep people in the military.

Positive aspects to both.

This led me to look up McCain's history on veteran benefits. I think there might be a distinction between supporting the individual vet and supporting the military in general.

Here is what I found out; I was, frankly, surprised.

Byrd you haven't ever posted anything this guy has done or stood for.
As far as any of these positions being based on the Constitution, I'm impressed. Welfare to illegal aliens, partial birth abortions, drivers licenses to illegal aliens just to name a few are all new to me, but then I have an older copy of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Mine must be outdated.

I think the only people who would believe this load of crap are you and Jane Fonda. If you are trying to "Swift Boat" McCain, you should look for a better tactic that to defame a war hero who gave everything he had for his country while his opponent was learning to hate people of a different skin color from a minister in Chicago. Good luck with that approach. It will just inflame more people to vote for McCain and show what low class people Obama supporters are.

And I rarely will. I figure that if people REALLY wanted to know the record of either candidate, they would go to their webpage and seek out info from all sides of the political spectrum. And then use their brains.

But I'll take the bait. I have about half an hour.

1) Welfare is not available to illegal immigrants. There are even restrictions for legal immigrants. The only exception is funding back to hospitals to cover emergency services. Obama does not support subsidizing insurance for current illegals. This is being passed around by the 'cut and paste' crowd.

2) The partial birth law was a success for the pro-choice group because so few took a look at the law and assumed the grisly images of a late-term fetus being cut up. Late term abortions have always, and remain, illegal. The law IF YOU LOOK AT IT YOURSELF is about a certain procedure (rarely used anyway on early term abortions) that someone Congress thought they understood better than physicians. This did not make one damn difference on the availablity or legality of abortion.
But, since he has a degree in law, Obama understood that from a purely LEGAL standpoint, this provided some legal foundation for a real move to compromise a woman's right to choose-- ie Roe v Wade, which McCain has stated he wants overturned.
If you are against a woman's right to choose, this was a legal victory.
It was a brave vote given that the 'past and cut' crowd could maybe convince stupid people that Obama was for late-term partial-birth abortions. It might be working tho.
3) Many police departments support the drivers license thing. Primarily for two reasons. If people have a license, they get insurance. And, if people have a license, you can more easily find out who they are if they are arrested or in an accident. A public saftey issue again used by the 'cut and paste' crown to tap in on the perception that (either) candidate is pro-illegal immigrant.

I love that term 'pro-illegal immigrant' Nobody is FOR illegal immigration. But nice to unfairly frame labels to negate the voice of anyone that realizes that 'SEAL THE BORDER' or 'ROUND THEM UP AND SHIP THEM HOME' is naive, unrealistic and a non-solution.

There, I'm done.
