Just what is Justice

We often hear of the term "justice." We even hear famous quotations:
Justice delayed is democracy denied. -Robert F. Kennedy
Justice without power is inefficient; power without justice is tyranny. -Blaise Pascal
Those who buy justice wholesale can sell it retail. -Armand Jean du Plessis
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. -Martin Luther King
Let justice roll down like waters and reighteousness in an everlasting steam. -Amos 5:24, Old Testament
Justice is truth in action. -Benjamin Disraeli

Is justice only left for the courts? How do we use justice in our lives every day? Do we, in effect, practice what we preach? Do we promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person through promotion of justice?
I would be curious to hear others' opinions of the term "justice" and the impact of it on their lives and those around them.
Thanks

In response to the definition of justice,
I think MLK had it right! Justice anywhere
is a threat and we, corporatly are responsible.
Thus, our entry into the present war.

Individually, it count's too. If we see one
weaker or different than us being put down or
hurt, we should stand up and protect. That is
the premise of most child welfare laws. There
have been some terrible injustices of children
in the news. There were probably many opportunities
for INDIVIDUALs to stand and protect those children.

I have trouble thinking in generalities without
examples. So, I hope I am understanding this
discourse.

I think we are all guilty of not paying the price of justice in small ways while some don't pay for the even the larger scale offenses. I see the CRIME of lack of justice in our courts and even in this countie's political arena. It's a shame we all cry out for justice yet seem to sweep so many very debilitating issues in/for this country under the carpet.

It is funny you mention this. I had something happen to a loved one. I went to the police and further to get help . I received NO JUSTICE. I pray for that everyday on my knees.
Since that awful day I practice what I preach. I walk a straight line. It is noe so good for people around me but at this point in my life . I am what I am.

Justice is another one of those darned relative terms. Just ask any lawyer or judge. That's why there is advocacy. There are always at least two viewpoints as to what is just.

To me, justice is balance, as represented by the woman with the scales.

Justice is when two parties go into court, and the one with the best lawyer wins.

Not only does she have scales, she blindfolded and has a sword.

Richard Pryor once said " When you go down to the court house looking for justice, you only find Just Us ". Of course he was talking about the disparage between black people and white who get caught up in the justice system.

However we've seen that money is the great equalizer. if your rich color is not a factor ( OJ Simpson, Robert Blake ).

Justice is a superficial concept that we use to revel in, complain about, rally around, and levy on the lesser of us. It is the illusion of one getting there just do.
True justice would exonerate the innocent and fittingly penalize the guilty no matter color, genda, or social standing.

It is said that we have the best justice system compared to the rest of the world. That pretty much means the whole world sucks.

HappyKat57 asked: “Do we promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person through promotion of justice?”

Whoa! That is really a loaded question. Let’s unpack it and see all the questions that would have to be answered first before we could even consider HappyKat’s question.

1. The "inherent worth" of a person: what makes you think that a person in “inherently” (whatever that means) worth anything?

2. The (inherent?) dignity of a person: what is this?

3. If something is already inherently valuable, how is it possible to “promote” that?

4. What is Justice, any way?

5. How is a person supposed to “promote justice”?

Question: Is Justice what the "Justice System" decrees? Or is there a criterion of Justice that is not relative to a country's judicial system, or to what the majority of a culture thinks is appropriate, whereby we can weight that country's (e.g. USA, China, Cuba) Judical system in the balances and find it wanting?
