Terrified kitty from 4th of July fireworks

Everyone:
My little Louie (a black and white) has been skulking around for several days now, slinking down the stairs on his tummy, startling and racing for cover everytime some neighborhood kid/adult sets off a firecracker. Poor little beast, I feel so sorry for him and try to comfort him but so far all he does is hide. I've tried creating some "hidey-holes" for him so maybe he will feel safer but nothing seems to help. He won't eat or drink and even refuses his favorite treat (Philadelphis cream cheese with salmon).
Any ideas to ease his fear?
Thanks for listening and caring.

Hi Loui88,

Does he go into any of the "hidey-holes"? If not, try positioning his cat carrier someplace convenient, and open the door. Strange as that seems, sometimes they feel safe and secure in their cat carriers. Also, are YOU reacting to the noises? They can even make us "jump" a bit when they go off unexpectedly. If you just act like everything is A-OK, maybe he will pick up on your calmness. At least it will be over in another day or two!! Good Luck!

I am sorry that Louie get so frightened about the loud noises and the firecrackers this time of year. I know exactly what you mean. My precious Little Rickie is terrified of loud noises from trucks, cars, sirens, firecrackers and thunder. He will run for cover as soon as he hears it. With thunder, he can hear it before I do and he is gone. I try to comfort him and there is no comfort for him. I just let him hide, usually behind my couch or in the basement, until the noise is over. My sweet Bonnie has no fear and will even sit in the window and watch it storm outside. I wish I knew a way that I could help Rickie to not be so scared but he will be 4 in August and has been like this since I adopted him at 6 months old.
Please give Louie a big hug from us and tell him it will be quite soon.

Poor baby - I feel so badly for our little furbabies that get frightened like that. While I do not like the idea of having to give our pets drugs - if the baby is scared beyond comfort - something like Prozac (from the vet) may help ease his anxiety. We wouldn't want him to get so frightened that it will affect him permanently. My mom had a dog that was afraid of storms, so when she knew one was coming, she would give her the Prozac, and it would calm her down.

We have a little scottish fold who skittles around with noises and hides.....and it is hard because they just don't want anything then but to get away. The cage trick may work because they do find comfort in the close quarters...or a nice laundry basket or box with towels in it. I know when ours get scared they go right under the bed and hid in the middle admist all the plastic storage boxes....and they won't come out for love, money or fish! Give him a hug from me and my three fur babies when he comes out.....

i understand about u little kitty cause my beautiful boy gets terrified every time it thunders - he also crawls around the house as if to find some place to hide - try what i do - when i have to go out i put on my jazz music - its not rock cause that would be too much but u need some type of music that will distract the cat - when i'm home i always leave the tv on it will distract my boy too - above all else keep ur kitty inside
