Ice T on Blaxpotation Movies
Ice-T's Rap on Blaxploitation
Posted Tue Jul 1, 2008 9:00am PDT by Ice-T in GetBack
The '80s was when I got hip to the entire blaxploitation movement — movies like Black Caesar, Shaft, The Mack, Superfly— all which put black people in a very powerful stance, usually fighting the police. This was the first time black kids saw ourselves up on the screen, and we weren't getting our asses kicked; we finally got to kick someone's ass. And the clothes. . . like Pam Grier doing Foxy Brown.. . just the vibe of that whole thing. They were some of the craziest, most funky films ever made. I took all that right into my music. Here are five classic blaxploitation joints that still hold up.

What's Ice-'s best video? We think it's "O.G. Original Gangster". Got something to say?
1) "Shaft" (from Shaft) -- Isaac Hayes
The best known song of the bunch and for good reason. No one was mixing up a wah-wah with a 40-piece orchestra. He won an Oscar for the tune in 1972. Check Isaac's live performance from Wattstax. Jesse Jackson is introducing him.
2) "Superfly" (from Superfly) -- Curtis Mayfield
The best bassline ever. It's been sampled by the Beastie Boys, Notorious B.I.G., Nelly among others. Ice-T re-recorded the song with Curtis in 1990. Check Curtis on The Flip Wilson Show.
3) "Trouble Man" (from Trouble Man) -- Marvin Gaye
Marvin wrote the sexiest of all the blaxploitation themes. The film trailer has street poetry that rivals any rap song.
4) "Coffy Is The Color" (from Coffy) -- Roy Ayers
Roy Ayers has a serious jazz pedigree. Lionel Hampton gave him his first vibrophone mallets at age five. He wrote a slick theme for one of blaxploitation's femme heroes, Pam Grier.
5) "The Boss" (from Black Caesar) -- James Brown
The Godfather is in his typical funk finest from this 1973 film. His longtime bandmate, Fred Wesley, helped him out with the score.
