July 2nd

Today would have been my dad's 100th birthday. We lost him in 1992 and his last 15 years on this earth were not easy after he had what I guess was a stroke or cerebral accident as the doctor's called it. His speech and mind were never affected, but his left side was so he had to use a walker for some years before that was in a wheel chair.

On to other events in history. I do not remember seeing Shirley Temple until I was much older and saw reruns on TV. My favorite child actress was Margaret O'Brien who was about my age, I think. What about the rest of you? Who were your favorites?

In 1934, 6-year-old Shirley Temple signed a contract with Fox Film Corp. and went on to become one of the biggest movie stars of the day.

In 1937, U.S. aviator Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick Noonan were reported lost over the Pacific Ocean. They were never found.

In 1964, U.S. President Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Other Birthdays:
- German novelist Herman Hesse in 1877
- Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 1908
- Singer/actor Ken Curtis ( Gunsmoke's Festus) in 1916
- Civil rights activist Medgar Evers in 1925
- Imelda Marcos, wife of former Philippine President Fernando Marcos, in 1929 (age 79)
- Wendy's fast-food restaurant chain founder Dave Thomas in 1932
- Actress Polly Holliday in 1937 (age 71)
- Former race car driver Richard Petty in 1937 (age 71)
- Actor/director Ron Silver in 1946 (age 62)
- Actor Jimmy McNichol in 1961 (age 47)

This may seem strange, I had to be at least 11 before I ever got to go to the movies, and then it was a Western on a Saturday afternoon or Saturday night.[ the only kind they showed on Saturday in the small country town where we would go];were Gene Autry or Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. I did get to see Shirley Temple when I was 15 or 16. Thanks for memories.

I don't remember seeing Shirley Temple when I was young either but I have enjoyed watching her movies after I was grown. I was a young teen when I finally got to go to the Saturday matinees.
