WHY DO SOME MOTORCYCLIST

rev the engine constantly at a stop?

I think they just want attention. What cracks me up is the sport bikers that do it with their chainsaw sounding exhaust. lol

years ago there was a very good reason to do this. we had carbs, points and condenser ignition, weak coils, weak generators. all these items would cause the spark plugs to foul during idling. to clean the fouling off of the plugs it was necessary to blip the throttle.
with injection, alternators and electronic ignition it just isn't normally required anymore.

I was thinkin' low idle to give some benefit.

i got to thinking on this one after seeing the sportbike comment. if the sportbike is setup for really hard throttle use over a long period then it will be set to the rich side and running "cold" spark plugs. this is similar to the way i have my sporty setup for my blast to indy which will require 11 hours in the saddle holding a speed of 85mph to conteract the time for refueling every 120 miles. with cold range plugs at normal idle speed there is a tendency to load the cylinders up with a rich mixture (the rich mixture being required to induce cooling and prevent premature detonation or "ping"). however i have to admit that even with a rich mix and cold plugs i never saw a reason to clear the sporty's throat last weekend while making my last fuel mileage tests (with a 3.3 gallon tank there ain't much room for error lol).
and that's about the only reason i can think a modern bike would ever need to clear it's throat.

ps. 2 up and steady 85mph we got a two tank average of 43.387mpg. this included our "luggage" with 2 changes of clothes for both of us in the duffle bag bungeed to the rack.

Back in the old days (70’s) was racing sports cars. With any engine at the time that was built to within an inch of its life, they load up and foul the plugs. So you had to keep blipping the throttle to keep it cleaned out.
With modern engines on the street there in no need the rev it, I think they like to hear the noise, and look at me, I’m cool
