Growing Up, Were You A . . .

Tomboy? Did you rip your clothes off climbing trees? Did you play football with the boys? In what ways were you a TomBoy?

I was always a girly girl, never even remotely tom boyish...

I had three older brothers. I thought I could and should do anything they did. Yes, I was absolutely a tomboy.

I was such a TomBoy, mom could not keep dresses on me without the waistline being ripped. I grew up in Bostong and loved to climb the Pear Trees. We played stick ball on the streets, but that's about it. Believe me, I am a girlie girl in almost every other way. But, somewhere along the way I became very, very independent. Probably comes from three girls growing up with a single mom.

I hung out with my big brother, we searched for earth worms, played leap frog, and he taught me many things like how to ride a bike, climb a tree, fish with a willow branch, fly a kite, operate a lawn mower, roller skate, make the yo-yo go around the world, throw a baseball, ride a horse, I could go on and on.

But I loved nail polish, and fancy dresses and tap dancing, and take long baths, getting my hair curled, and just being a girl. I guess I had the best of both worlds.

I was always dressed in ruffles! Even when I wore jeans, or overalls, my mom would put a ruffled blouse on me; and ribbons in my hair! I tried to be brave and strong just like my daddy but ended up being a girly-girl most of the time.

I was a tomboy all the way through. I played football and stickball with the guys. I also climbed trees. One time I was hanging from a tree limb just above our slide. I slipped and fell, hitting the sandbox below. I cut the side of my face. I still have the mark today. When people ask how I got I always smile telling the story.

I don't think I was a tomboy or a girlie girl. I didn't like dresses but I wasn't good enough at sports to be a tomboy. I guess I was what you would call a nerd.

I was a tomboy between the ages of five and ten. I played war, built forts, climbed trees, dammed up creeks, and had a ball. Then the estrogen started kicking in, and bingo, instant insecurity and self-consciousness.

Tomboy. Tree climbing - yup, jumping off the roof of the garage - yup, hanging with the boys and doing pretty darn much whatever they did, oh ya. I've got lots of scars to prove it, but man did I have fun.
