Hercules

Hi everyone...My Hercules, 11 yr. old Shih Tzu, has been DX with cataracts and his eyes are not constricting properly and therefore needs help on stairs, etc. when going from dark place to bright!!!! My vet thought a visor or sunglasses might be beneficial.....Has anyone else had this happen to their pet? How did you resolve the problem? I have thought of having his "brows" grow out and form its own visor....but his eyes now are running and I was thinking it might be difficult to keep his eyes clean!!! I would appreciate any help!! thank you! Jazzy

Hello Jazzplayer and Hercules

Welcome to our group.

I have not heard personally anything like the condition Hercules has, but the visor sounds simple enough and easy to get. To let the brows grow out is not such good idea as the eyes will water if the brow is to long and hangs into the eye. In fact lots of things makes a shih tzu's eye water as they protruting so much.
If you read some of the other messages there is a link to the American Shih Tzu association, and they have a fantastic site that explains all Shih Tzu stuff.
Hope this helps.

Jazzy,
There are something called "Doggles" which are protective eyewear for dogs....one lady I know got them for her Tzu as she takes her pup riding in a basket on her bike.
They're really neat looking....very Hollywood!
If you are not planning to have the catarracts operated on, of course Hercules' sight will diminish over time, but dogs are very adaptable, especially if they have lived in the same home for a few years. They know their way around. They get to know stairs by feel way more than sight. I know in some areas there are no doggie eye surgeons, and not everyone can afford them either (I couldn't) but as I said, dogs are able to
compensate for diminishing eyesight, esp. if it occurs slowly, as with catarracts.
Try the visors while outside in direct sun, or the "Doggles" )(available at Petsmart, etc).
Good luck with your boy.....let us know how he is doing!
