Anyone know

I'm using Microsoft Word 02 to write my novel.

Does anyone know if you can switch languages in the middle of text?

My character is proficient in two languages, english and spanish. The character get so mad that in the middle of yelling in elglish, they switch over to spanish. I would like to write what the character says in spanish, in spanish.

Can this be done in Word?

I can't really answer your question about Word, but there are some translators available online. I do have a question for you. How much of your dialogue is going to be in Spanish? Be very careful when using foreign languages. If you readers can't understand what the character is saying, you'll lose the effect. Many people can pick up on familiar phrases or one or two words, but any more than that can lead to problems. Let me look at some discarded chapters and see how I handled a character switching to Spanish in a heated moment. (This make take awhile since I need to do some serious searching!).

Wasn't planning on using much Spanish. As in real relationships, Lester/Wymann would be asking Hailey/Estrella about it and as in real relationship she would have some fun repeating or trying to teach him a word or two. Also have a few choice words slip out when she gets mad.

Just a thought to improve my story line.

I don't understand this question. Just write the Spanish part in Spanish ... you weren't expecting Word to translate it, were you?

No, I wasn't. I'll look the words up in a Spanish/English dictionary. That's the fun part.

I don't know how to get the Spanish accent symbols to appear with the letter, word or phase they are associated with.

Oh, now I understand what you want to do.
You can either change the keyboard setting to Spanish, or you can use (from Word) INSERT->SYMBOL and choose the appropriate symbol.
However .... I think you may have problems with your idea .... remember, language is idiomatic, merely translating words doesn't necessarily result in what you might expect. EG "Que padre" seems to mean "what a father!" but in reality it is idiomatic and means, "wow, how cool!" or something similar.

If you really feel you need to add Spanish, why don't you find someone who is bilingual who might be able to write it out for you? I have three kids I sponsor in South America, and I used to have a fellow law student help me write something in Spanish so it looked like I was making an effort to correspond in their language. Know anyone who is fluent in Spanish? A friend or a friend of a friend?

Thank you all for your comments.

It was something that I had in the back of my mind to add a little amusment to the story. If it was going to be easy to do, I wanted to see how it played out.

Nothing more.

If you don't ask a question, you'll never get an answer. But the one I really like is, The only dumb question is the one never asked.

barquentine has it right, Donald. Just type whatever you want in any language you choose then go to the top of the page, click on insert, click symbol, the look for the symbol you want. (upside down exclamation, accented e, etc) And you may have to select the right font in order to find the right symbol for your font.
