The heart of the fight?

Article title is: "Flag City USA where Obama Rumors Fly."

Interesting article about people in a small Ohio town trying to decide what to believe about Senator Obama.

Hopefully some of those swing voters will read and absorb the real truth about Obama and will vote for him.
We can only hope and pray.

Good read. No doubt this scenario is repeated all around the country. It's not surprising that such an insular community would be susceptible to absurd rumors. If only more people would be like Peterson and learn and contemplate the election. Unfortunately, and I have run across it time and again, most people are just not caring enough, either through ignorance or just resolution that nothing will change regardless of whom is elected.

I read that article, too --

I think SOME people are really looking for any excuse NOT to vote for a young black man to lead this country. They'll grasp at ANY rumor as reinforcement for their suspicions that "he's not like us -- he's dangerous." They know we need a change, they know that McCain will only perpetuate the hell of the past 8 years, and they know deep down that Obama is the best hope we've got for real positive change.

But they just can't get past the fact that "he's not like us."

Yes, I believe the root of most of this #*!)% is racism. If Obama were white, there would be NO concern about whether or not he's Muslim, etc.

And most of these folks will NEVER say "I can't vote for him because he's black." Instead, they come up with the most absurd lies to validate their unspoken racism: "I can't vote for him because he's Muslim; I can't vote for him because he's anti-American" .. etc.

It goes without saying that the GOP is going to work to keep the doubts/fears/racism in the forefront of their campaign tactics.

After eight years of Bush that's all they got. They have nothing positive to run on.

But my dears we all knew that from the start. Let's just keep hope alive and keep moving forward in a positive way because Lord knows as the saying goes "we get the government we deserve" and none of us deserves John McCain.

A dear friend of mine from Ohio sent me an e-mail recently that reported the "fact" that one of Obama's first actions after taking office would be to change the national anthem to "We Are The World". When I sent her a link to the Snopes site as well as a link to Fight The Smears, she responded by telling me that no matter what Obama did he would always come out smelling like a rose but that she still didn't trust him.

This is not some mindless twit. This is a responsible, middle-aged, registered nurse and mother. She is a Christian and an upstanding citizen in her small home town. How do you combat that kind of deep-set ignorance?

Merlinsflame.....your friend may be a responsible person, a registered nurse, etc., but may have ingrained prejudices even she is not aware of. Some education doesn't always leave ones mind open. I am white....and I must agree that if Senator Obama was white, all this stuff would NOT be an issue....not trusting him, whether he's Muslim, blah blah blah, etc., etc. etc. It saddens me that the distrust exists, the racism, but it does. I can be thankful that race has never been an issue with me.
We can work hard to educate, sow seeds where we can, and just pray that the majority of people will see the light.......his light......and that he will be our next President.
