did I sign up for the wrong group?

In my daily digest, I read the topics for all my groups' activities. In this group, there seems to be a disproportionate discussion of Christianity and religion. Religion usually requires an unquestioned obedience to the teachings/dogma of a particular religion and goes on faith without proof, something that does not require deeper thinking. I thought I signed up for the Deeper Thinkers group. Did I sign up for the wrong group? Is this the religion discussion group? If this is the case, and I signed up for the wrong group, please let me know and I will withdraw my name. If I did not sign up for the wrong group and this is the Deeper Thinkers group, then I will mirror the sentiments of another member and respectfully request that we spend less time discussing religion and more time discussing deeper issues/topics. I would prefer to discuss religion on Sundays at my own church of my choosing. Thanks, folks.

I follow no religion and shall probably opt not to reply to any messages on that topic.

And, since I belong to three political groups (and have closely followed the Democratic primary season), I am burnt out on politics and (most likely) will bypass any posts on that subject.

So it seems that, for me, the hot-button issues will go in one ear (or, rather, eye) and out the other.

Perhaps, I can even stay out of trouble that way.

The post, Zeitgeist, The Movie" just has religion in its first part. The rest is about 911, the government, banking industry, etc. If you don't want to talk about religion, just don't respond to those topics. You can always pose questions of your own as well. I for one would be happy to have some variety. I post items I think are a little controversial or will open up some communication or need a little deep thought.

I'm probably not in the best position to defend the "Christians" but I would like to point out that there are several Christian faiths that encourage questioning and thinking for one's self (as does Judaism, in most strains). The "blind faith in dogma" movement has certainly grown, but does not represent all of Christianity by any means. However, I will grant you that the recent postings seem to be attracting more of the latter than the former, and I find that frustrating as well. I agree that "Because the Bible says so" is not thinking on any level--just expressing what one believes. Maybe someone needs to start a "This is what I believe" group--it's worked out pretty well for NPR!

Wow! Pomposity also is not necessarily a function of deeper thinking. Pray tell what deeper subjects would you consider, oh, enlightened one?

I am not a religious person but I do consider myself to be spiritual, I practice some pagan rituals that were taught to be by my great grandmother - that is the Irish way before the Catholics took over. I also consider myself Catholic and I occasionally attend Mass. But having been put down by the Christian religions because of my "lifestyle" I prefer not to practice any of them. And generally do not talk about it.

Like MsTick I am also burnt out on politics and will discuss them in my other groups.

My advice as a moderator and as a group owner - don't respond if you don't like the subject and move on to the other posts. I always recommend reading all the posts under a particular topic - you just never know what twists and turns the conversation will take.

It is what it is. How is that for deep thinking? If indeed you are a deep thinker then you already know that no one is forcing you to read anything that you are not interested in. Look more closely because there is a nice variety of topics, including some that are religious in nature. Does deep mean philosophical to you? Psychological? Scientific? Mystical? Cosmic? What exactly are you looking for? My suggestion and hope is that you stay with us and post topics that interest you. My guess is that among the 300+ others would share your interest.

happykat we are glad to have you here. This group discusses many things, deep and otherwise. If we get onto religion sometimes its because some have an interest in it and the talk just flows in that direction. If you do not enjoy that then please feel free to post your own thoughts. We are not here to entertain but to participate. You were asked when welcomed to go back and look at older posts to see if there were topics of interest (actually you can see from that before you join what our posts are about) so please bring any one of the old posts back for discussion. In the meantime all I can suggest is that you come up with your own thoughts and ideas and we can join in. We are a happy group and enjoy each others thoughts and ideas, not eveyone is comfortable with religion and so they just pass those by. Same goes with politics........we can not read your mind and so we have no idea what would please you......please enlighten us.

I am a part of Deeper Thinkers. Not everything interests me that is posted here. So i wait until i see something that does and then I go ahead with my opinion. OR i start my own post. You can do the same.
This is not a religious group. But religion is part of life and therefore something alot of different people like to discuss. Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic there are alot of us out there. It is natural therefore that it would come up as a topic for discussion.
That does not make the group a religious group but a group thinking deeply about their religious thoughts and discussing it with the group!
If one doesnt like the post they start their own topic of interest plain and simple in my opinion. I dont get my knickers in a twist when it seems that for several days there are things i have no interest in, i just bide my time and hop around through my other groups and come back to Deeper Thinkers when i see something that does interest me.
Hang in there....there have been some really good discussions and topics and some fun stuff too that will crack you up. Just give it some time!
