Mindfulness

At Sangha Sunday gathering today, we watched a video
on a talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh on being mindful, and
because of this mindfullness, being engaged fully in the present.
We can see the seeds of negative emotions as they are
disturbed and cut them off with mindfulness; by being aware of them and not letting them grow to fruition.
He stressed the necessity of practice in order to aquire this stability in mindfulness amd concentration.
He also talked a little about his earlier years in VietNam
amd his position during the wars with France and the U.S.
Wonderful lecture.

I believe it was in his book 'The Miracle of Mindfulness' that Thich Nhat Hahn suggests having a day a week to be completely mindful. Not easy if you aren't going to be alone the entire day.

I did this one day when my husband was out of town. Did everything very slowly and mindfully. No tv, radio, computer, etc. Clean, eat, long bath, long walk out in the woods if possible, several meditation sessions, all done totally mindfully. Incredible!

"The Miracle of Mindfulness" is one of my favorite Buddhist books. It's not as easy as it sounds "washing the dishes just to wash the dishes."

Question for zen2: does this video have a title, and is it possible to rent it, or maybe get it through interlibrary loan?

Ponytail, yes it is very very difficult to be completely mindful and not let your mind wander. Where I'm living now I have to do the laundry by hand. I do this sitting on a stool on the back porch usually in pleasantly warm weather. I find this the, if not easy, least difficult to be mindful doing. Seems that every other chore makes my mind wander easily.

In reply to P.T's question about this video, I've found out that it is a 2 hour video...we saw only 1 hour and had to stop..but it was bought by one of the Sangha students who had gone to VietNam with TNH and bought it when she was there. Perhaps Plum Village will have a title...I'll try to find out.
