It is amazing what one can see from the window of a train. The journey was not all scenery and fun train rides, though. More than once I was robbed, and twice beaten but it was all worth the endeavor. Most of the time I found people friendly and helpful. Just seeing things and places I had never seen was thrilling.
My travels took me along the coasts of ten major seas and the Atlantic and the Pacific. Sometimes events in the world kept me from traveling to places I had planned to go to or through.
Some of the highlights of the journey were:riding trains above the Arctic Circle; riding on trains where several of its cars were shunted onto a huge ferry to cross waterways;crossing to the Russian Far East through Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Express; Meeting or just seeing people of so many nationalities.
Then there are a few lowlights: Being stranded late at night where all the nearby hotels were full or closed and there were no more trains leaving until morning;Jumping off a moving train(slow-moving)to help a woman who was rolling towards the wheels of the train.
She had gotten off as the train pulled away from her stop at a small country town in Poland. There was no station, only a slanted, gravel embankment for passengers to detrain.I received only minor injuries.
In spite of the pitfalls,it was the most exciting time of my life. I beat the record in February,1997 at age sixty-five and was first listed in the 1998 Guinness Book.
