Good Morning Food for Thought

June 27, 2008

Quote of the Day

"It's like driving at night in the fog. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
~Edgar Lawrence Doctorow

Everything we have mastered, we have learned one step at the time. We weren't born knowing how to do very much of anything. A few basic, instinctual actions, that was about it. Look at us now and what we've accomplished.

Changing our bad habits into healthy, good habits isn't any different. Very few, if any of us can do it over night. It takes practice, just like everything else we have learned over the years. Patience with ourselves is helpful. Understanding that it took us years to develop the habits we have and accept that it is going to take time to change them is important.

Persevering one step, one habit at the time will get us there. It's not a race, it's a new way of life, and we have the rest of our lives to perfect it. The more diligent we are, the sooner we'll get it right. As with most roads, this one will have it's share of bends and bumps, but see them as just that, bends and bumps, not cliffs that you've fallen over.

The journey never ends, but the fog will clear and the road will become much smoother and easier to travel.

Geri, what a wonderful thought to start my day. Being patient with myself is something I work on all the time. I am making progress and that is what counts.
Thank you

I agree with Treasuregirl. Patience is the key. Thats been a hard lesson for me. In the past, I wanted to get this weight on quickly so I would "look good". All I could think of was the cloths I could wear and how I could then go back to eating the bad foods again........n o t.......This time its all different. It really doesn't matter how fast I lose it, as long as I'm losing and not gaining. When I reach my goal weight. I will stay there and never go back to eating the way I did.

That's the key, Diana. If you go back to your old eating habits, as you know, you'll find every pound you lost. Once you reach your goal this time, you shouldn't have any trouble maintaining your new weight because you're eating healthy foods in healthy portions. Your body is adjusting to that. The longer you eat healthy the less you crave the unhealthy food.

Now, if you get into the habit of a nice walk after dinner, a little exercise during the week, you'd be surprised how much that extra activity will help speed up your attaining your goal. Besides, it's good for your heart!!!

Oh Geri you're right again! Patience is so important, after all we did not get here overnight and it will take time and patience to make changes permanent.

I know I have to exercise in addition to healthy eating. I'm getting the healthy eating and have managed to convert my hubby without even trying. He noticed that he has more energy after eating foods in their natural form (without fats, creamy sauces, etc.)

It's the exercise that is testing my patience. I purchased a exercise CD for beginners and have learned the basic core cardio exercises. But I am seldom able to keep up for more than 10 minutes and haven't yet graduated to the strength training.

Impulsively I bought Richard Simmon's sweating to the 60's music and today I had so much fun dancing that I did not even notice that 45 minutes had lapsed when the CD ended... and boy was I 'glowing.'

Alright, I admit that we each have to find what works for us, but when we do... watch out, there is no getting in the way of our determination.

I remembered you saying that we should not rely on the scale to affirm our progress. I check once a week and did not lose anything this week, but misplaced 2 inches - WOO HOO.

That you to all for your support and encouragement.

Misplacing 2" sounds like a good thing to me. Glad you found that dancing workout that you enjoy. Enjoying what we are doing makes it so much easier. I took Chris roller skating today. I haven't been on skates in, oh 35 years. Took a couple laps around the rink to get the feel back, but I had a blast, when I wasn't picking him up!
