There is a warning list with side effects for Lyrica. It does include suicidal thoughts or behavior. Neurontin and a host of at least 11 other meds are ones that you have to be very careful. See link:

This can also occur with drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and other antidepressants.

I don't like to make light of a very serious situation but when I know that side effects of drugs can have both mental and physical side effects we have to be cautious of any meds we ingest. We all have to be very careful.

Cymbalta also has this warning;
You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.

While not wanting to sound harsh or unsympathetic I think some of these families are grief ridden (rightfully so). As long as laws are enforced and when dispensing meds pharmacies must provide you with a handout that covers side effects some of the responsibility must lie with the patients. I really feel pain for this surviving family members and don't in any way want to sound uncaring in my reply.

I hope not since I am on it. I don't have any feeling or depression from taking the meds, but, some people I guess could, but, that could happen with about any medication that had effect to your brain.

I really feel for those families who lose a loved one to suicide.

I also believe that we all read the warnings and think, I need relief and will take anything that will help. None of us think the "bad" side effects will happen to us. I think sometimes it is the illness plus the medicine that contributes to our thoughts. Another reason to be honest with your drs. when they ask how you are doing. Perhaps drs. should be trained to ask the right questions also to determine how a drug is effecting their patients.

I've been taking Cymbalta for over 1 1/2 years now without any side effects. My doctor monitors me every 6 months and for me to call her if I am having any kind of trouble, whether I think it's from the medication or not. I really trust my doctor with her ability to take care of me.

If the bad side effects of any medication contribute to any medical problem there are always class-action lawsuits going on. If the attorneys have enough people respond to their ad they have a better chance of getting compensation...with most of the money going to the attorney in most cases. A death by suicide is a tragedy but the entire picture of an individual's medical diagnosis, drug interactions and many other factors must be taken into consideration. I guess it's a roll of the dice for many of us taking lots of meds for many conditions. You can check the drug interactions between two drugs but when you start throwing other drugs into the mix it is impossible to know what kind of chemical reactions you are setting off. While clinical studies show Lyrica and Cymbalta help with fibro I can guarantee that no study has been done that includes the other muscle relaxers, sleep meds, pain meds, IBS meds, etc. that many of us take to better manage our condition. I think that is one reason we often ask, "Is it Fibro?" that is causing the symptoms we experience. I, personally, will continue with my particular "cocktail" of med combinations.

hippiemama, I hope its not as serious as that sounds. I ha ve been on it since it hit the market & so far no thoughts like that. I was unlucky enough to be off it when I got to Fla because my script ran out & I was having a doozy of a time getting adoc. Well all is good as I found a great one.So I am in good hands now.

i didnt post to be sympathetic. sorry, but im really not. if it says thats a side effect, the family should have watched.

i just heard it, and wasnt sure others here had, and i know they are on it. therefore i didnt see the fine print, and wondered if they did. it was information only.

on the other hand, if it wasnt informed and they killed themselves, then yeah, im very sympathetic. i remember what happened with another muscle relaxant that went off the market, and was just wondering if everyone knew.

if a law firm is willing to do a class action suit, via tv (which is expensive), then there must be enough cases to make it worth their while.

so i just hope everyone knows this is a side effect and to WATCH OUT.

HM, I took it as info we needed to hear. Sometimes we take meds because we are so desparate for relief. I worry about all the various side effects myself but I gotta have relief! Thanks for the info.

Some people are very depressed & that is why they went on antidepressants in the first place. They suddenly feel better and just enough to commit the act of suicide.
Of course, there is a higher risk of suicide with any med that can potentially change your emotions or the workings of our brains.
Class action suits are designed to make lawyers rich. The litigants get pennies on the dollar. I know. I am in one which has been pending forever. (phen-phen---the diet meds)
It is hard to monitor for someone who will commit suicide because often they are depressed & suddenly feel better. Who would know. Unless they state that they are going to do it.
Don't worry about it. If you feel suicidal, tell someone. They will usually report it to someone & your will not actually do it. The people who achieve suicide have planned well. (my father) They make sure they are alone & have time & the means to do it. If they only want attention, they attempt suicide but get saved at the last minute because they know someone will intervene.
