Did John McCain Lie About Being Tortured?

A BBC news story, titled, 'When John McCain was my captive' describes an interview with McCain's captor. Here's an excerpt:

"Navy pilot John McCain was shot down during a bombing raid over the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, in 1967.
He ejected from his aircraft and parachuted into a city lake. . . . From there he was taken to Hoa Lo prison, known to its American military inmates as the "Hanoi Hilton".

"Tran Trong Duyet was in charge of the notorious Hoa Lo prison - the place where Mr McCain says he was brutally beaten and tortured during five-and-a-half years as an American prisoner of war.

"I don't know how he'd react if he met me again," said Mr Duyet, flicking through old black and white photographs of himself and his American prisoners at Hoa Lo.

"But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners."

Mr Duyet reminisces instead about how he often summoned the future US presidential candidate to his private office for informal chats.

So is Mr Duyet implying that that Senator McCain lied about his treatment at the Hanoi Hilton?

"He did not tell the truth," he says.

"But I can somehow sympathise with him. He lies to American voters in order to get their support for his presidential election."

absolutes - pro or con - should not be debatable unless you yourself was 100% there in their shoes.

There is nothing in this world that is 100% absolute - in agrement in yours and my mind at the exact same time. Everyone sees this world from a different view point.

John McCain , truthfull or not? I don't know, I do know what goes around, comes around and if he did fabricate it - it WILL come back to trip him up again.

Well, let's face it. Mr. Duyet has every reason to lie. Is he really going to go out and tell the whole world that he tortured prisoners?

And John McCain has been telling his exact same story since he retuned home, not just since he's been running for President.

I don't like McCain's politics, and I could never vote for him, but this kind of "swiftboating" is not what Barack is about.

Guys, it's the title of the post. Not really a question. The jailer, who admires the man a lot, says there was no torture. He was there. The article is neutral, IMO. Check it out.

If you haven't walked or even sort of walked in McCain's shoes it's a shame to talk about his suffering or even possible suffering. It only brings this to the forefront. Maybe the republicans have something to do with getting this jailer's story out and can get voters to focus on the fact that he WAS tortured. Remember how tricky the last election was. If we think about it some of us have suffered in big ways and if anyone suggested we were telling a lie about it.......that would really energize us to talk about it and I suppose get some sympathy. I would never vote for McCain for any reason.

Duyet says......"McCain is my friend......If I was americian I would vote for him......Wish him success in presidential election." Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like heavy properganda or funny politics ....to me. Are there ileageal votes being counted or etc. ( near past and present )that we don't know about?

If you folks are old enough to remember the Vietnam war and the returning of American POW"S you would know that most of them were tortured. The point of mccains injuries--where they caused by torture or by his crash?
Being locked up in a small cell with little or no contact with your fellows would be torture enougy. I have often been offended by the term "American Hero" when you sit out the rest of the war in prison--but looking at it again any of us who wore the Ameican uniform in Vietnam or any other police action or illegal war are heros....
THAT DOES NOT MAKE JOHN MCCAIN A SUITABLE CANDIDATE TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE US
any more than it makes me a suitable candidate

Not a credible witness.

I do not think that we supporters of Obama want to even consider this type of article as credible.

I was not there in the Hanoi Hilton, but I was just south of Danang and I saw what the VC and NVA did to Americans that they captured.

Is being a POW a requirement for being President? I doubt it, but let's not go there.

I cannot stand J McCain but I tend to believe his story sooner than that mans.McCain could have exageratted some of his torture. Makes no difference. And I don't care what happened to him there in regards to this election, as even if he was a tortured war hero 40 years ago, that does not make him competent to run the country today.

I will not vote for McCain and it has nohing to do with whether or not he was/was not tortured in Viet Nam.

But I certainly will not insult his experience either.

And excuse me but is Duyet likely to say "hell yeah...we tortured him and loved every minute of it!"

Probably not.
That article insults every soldier and every POW/MIA.
Whether it takes sides or not.
It is sensationalism.
